Mario, Please attach a Debug log to this issue after you try the Factory restore.
Settings > System > Debug > Debug Level = Debug
ReStart Boxee, and after experiencing the problem, close Boxee and attach your log file to the bug.
DEBUG log slows down the performance. so afterward, switch the log level back to NONE
Boxee Box log may be found at http://boxeebox:8080/ click on the "Get latest " link.

I will upload the debug logs, but yesterday i just send logs to boxee via send log as requested by Marcel.
My setup is All audio Outputs enabled, i have a HDMI cable to Tv and a SPDIF to AV (there is also a limitation here because boxee can send pcm to hdmi and Dolby or DTS to SPDIF, but thats another story)

Mario if you already sent logs please add you boxee serial number so we can locate them.
also, try to disable "Dolby Digital capable receiver" "DTS capable receiver" and all other options available in the same category (Dolby Digital plus, Dolby Digital TrueHD etc.) options when audio output is set to "SPDIF", and change back to "All Outputs"
please keep us updated if that helped.
Thanks.

I have this problem with 1.0.4.x and 1.1.x. This occurs most frequently when the Boxee Box resumes from power saver mode. A reboot always fixes it, although that is a rather annoying workaround.
I am using an optical audio cable connected directly to a 5.1 Sony receiver with DTS and DD5.1 support (video is via HDMI to the TV). In the settings I have "All Outputs" selected with none of the check boxes below selected (this is the only configuration where the sound through the optical cable works at all). All UI navigation sounds work fine until the unit goes to power saver mode, then this issue occurs about 30% of the time when I wake it back up.
Thanks.

Hello! I am also having this problem.
I have my boxeebox connected with Optical cable to my Logitech Z5500 system (which is DTS capable).
SInce update I cannot play movies with DTS sound anymore. I only get video but no sound.
I went into system settings and unchecked ""DTS capable receiver", I now get sound, but its not DTS.
Hope Boxeebox team resolves this really really fast, or I have to revert to the 1.0.4 firmware. I dont understand why they messed it up when it was working just fine on the previous firmware.

I'm having somewhat the same issue, but weirder. After the update, when my boxee box boots, i hear a high pitched whine. Then, if i start any app, lets say Netflix, the sound that is supposed to be playing gets really loud and high pitched, scratchy but no real sound, like you can't make out what anyone is saying or what song is playing or anything. I am running my video thru the hdmi and the audio thru the rc jacks, have an old tv. I'm planning on trying it using the optical tonight, but theres gotta be a fix. i've tried all audio options and nothing changes.
edit: reset back to factory defaults, installed latest version, all is well.

Also having this issue post 1.1 update this morning. HDMI to my Toshiba TV, Analog audio to a Sony AVR. When Boxee Box boots up, sound comes from TV and AVR. As soon as the Boxee software starts up it starts to buzz. Switching audio output tells me "failed to initialize...". Boxee Box is an oddly shaped brick at this point.
Edit: Did a factory reset and re-updated and all seems well again. Sound from both HDMI and analog. Just set it back to Analog now since I don't want sound from the TV speakers. It's a brute-force approach, but I'm back to a happy place.

I have the exact same problem with my Boxee after the update. If restore back to factory settings everything works ok. but with the latest firmware, the only sound I get is the animation sound when i first turn it on, after that it says it failed to initialise audio device. On the firmware previous to this i had no navigational sounds, and it wouldnt play movies with an mp3 audio track, but played DTS and dolby fine. I was hoping this latest firmware would fix this. My av reciever is a Sony STR-KS360S. I have tried both with optical cable direct, and HDMI audio, both with the same result.

I did some more thorough testing:
1. Sort out a red screen issue when accessing the recovery console
2. Reset to Factory State
3. Apply update as directed
RESULT: Failed to Initialize error is gone and I have audio in the Boxee UI again.
RESEARCH:
1. check audio configuration, all options unselected.
2. Select the top two (supported by any configuration I choose with my hardware).
RESULT: Both times I received the format not supported by device error and Boxee UI Audio is gone. I did not receive the failed to initialize error.
RESEARCH:
1. Attempt to watch an MKV with 5.1 DD
RESULT: No audio. Video froze somewhere within first 10 seconds. Attempting to leave failed and the boxee froze. The video is known good and was viewed on the previous Boxee version.
RESEARCH:
1. Soft-reset Boxee
RESULT:
Black Screen. No audio in boxee UI. Both options are still selected.
RESEARCH:
1. Unselect audio options.
RESULT:
Failed to initialize audio error returns.
RESEARCH:
1. Shutdown and Reboot Boxee
RESULT:
Black Screen. Failed to initialize error is gone and I have UI Audio again.
FINDINGS:
THEORY 1 :: The audio subsystem if it fails the handshake for selected output options at boot, it will not load to state where changing these options will have any effect. The reinit() on the audio doesn't work because the necessary kernel modules weren't correctly loaded to begin with. FAIL.
THEORY 2 :: Checking for support is a great idea in theory but a terrible idea in practice... unless the "failsafe" works and is clearly understood. reinit() on the audio subsystem should not fail simply because I chose to "allow" certain types of streams to pass through... The only time I care about the error message and the only time it matters is when I attempt to play back something that may not work correctly on my hardware... Ideally I would choose to pass the audio stream through or downmix to the "failsafe"... and I could set this as a default action for the given stream type and never have to worry about it again.
THEORY 3 :: The boxee box firmware isn't doing a good enough job resetting the state of the HDMI connection upon a reboot... During this process, I got a red screen and two black screens that required unplugging and replugging the HDMI Cable. I can appreciate that there are two ends to the cable here but the bottom line is that if my DVD, Blue Ray, and Sat receiver can reboot with my TV correctly when plugged in to my HDMI then so should my boxee box.

If DD5.1 is failing then you will not get menu clicks out either as once you tick "Dolby Digital capable receiver" the clicks are put out as fake DD5.1 (See http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-9752 ). In fact any 2 channel signal seems to be put out as DD5.1 once DD capable is selected.
As you said Cole this seems to be related to http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-9761
I have HDMI to LG TV which is used to pass through DD and DTS to Yamaha receiver via optical. Now I get a warning message when I enable DTS capable for HDMI and the same error (failed to initialize) when playing a DTS file. DTS is the only one affected for me. Dolby Digital works fine but it does not give me a warning when I tick it. It does however cause a funny popping sound when boxee loads, moving around so I get a click sound stops the popping noise.
I can understand the warning if the HDMI check says my TV can't handle DTS directly, however it is capable of passing the signal through as it used to do. Is the fail to initialize a rouge message as its not trying anymore because boxee thinks my device is not capable of handling the signal?
Optical direct connection from Boxee to my receiver works fine for DD and DTS.

I have the same issue as a few people mentioned. Since the latest update, I get startup sounds and then as soon as I can start navigating the boxee, I get the same "failed to initialize audio - check audiosetting"
Would it be helpful for me to send my logs as well, or does your team have enough info on this bug to troubleshoot?
Thanks!
___
I guess I spoke too soon. When I rolled back to factory settings, the sound was working fine. Then boxee forced me to upgrade to the current firmware, and the issue is gone this time. Awesome!

Would it be helpful for me to send my logs as well, or does your team have enough info on this bug to troubleshoot?
Thanks!

I guess I spoke too soon. When I rolled back to factory settings, the sound was working fine. Then boxee forced me to upgrade to the current firmware, and the issue is gone this time. Awesome!

I've been seeing the "failed to initialize audio device" message. I have HDMI to TV and optical connection to a DTS capable Yahmaha receiver. In old firmware S/PDIF Digital audio setting with Dolby Digital and DTS capable both checked worked just fine for both DD and DTS streams. Now, these settings result in NO DTS at all but DD works OK. If I got into audio settings and uncheck DD capable then DTS works again but plain DD comes through as PCM on the receiver. So, I can get both DD and DTS if I want to go to settings and check or uncheck DD Capable depending on the media I'm playing, but clearly this is a royal pain. Maybe the PCM is desireable since its not lossy but I'm not sure how many channels I'm getting. Also, not enough of an audiophile to know what I really want in that regard.

I've definitely seen this happen with my setup (Boxee Box via HDMI to Sony STR-DH810). I cannot submit a debug log because I've just (laboriously) rolled back to 1.0.4 and blocked further updates, so I can work around http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-9752. Under v1.1, when selecting any bitstream option, Boxee tells me that "my receiver says it cannot support this format" and then audio playback gives "cannot initialize audio device" errors. I also lose the UI feedback sounds. This problem persisted through a factory reset.
However, having rolled back to v1.0.4, I've now noticed that I get the same "not supported" message when ticking each of the bitstreaming checkboxes -- but audio playback is fine, as is the UI sounds. I originally set my box up on v1.0.1 (I think) and have had those options ticked ever since, and I don't recall seeing that message at the time, so it's possible there was a change between 1.0.1 and 1.0.4 that is related to this matter.

No logs from me as I rolled back and blocked updates. I have always had it HDMI out to TV, TV SPDIF out to receiver. DTS has never worked. I have never received the "Device does not support Dolby Digital error," I have a new Samsung TV that should handshake on that issue correctly. Strangely on the PC version of BB I always got the "Failed to initialize autdio device" error and the only fix was to change my soundcard to output 2 channel instead of 5.1. This is one of the reasons I abandoned the BB for PC.

Only DTS is affected for me.
Setup: Boxee Box connected to TV (LG 32LB9D) via HDMI. TV connected to receiver (Yamaha HTR-6130) via optical. TV passes DTS through to receiver.
Logs sent:

Audio output - Digital (HDMI) - DD capable receiver and DTS capable receiver ticked.
Debug set on. Rebooted, went into settings and cycled the DTS capable receiver off and then back on, warning appeared about device not supporting the option. Went to my movies and played Transformers which has a DTS track, failed to initialize audio device appeared and no sound.
Hope that helps... let me know if you need anything else.

I jumped the gun and updated to v1.1 on my Boxee Box. I too got this error and reverted back to v1.0.4 right away. A fix for this is URGENT. I did not even bother with trying other changes in the new version. Please resolve. If not, do not force my BB to update to v1.1.
I connect my BB to a HDMI switcher, from there a HDMI cable to my 1080P TV, and from the TV a optical fiber connection to a DD & DTS capable Yahmaha receiver.

Hi everyone,
The solution will be available in the next version due in a couple of days.
Please note: some users are using HDMI passthrough to optical. (Boxee->TV with HDMI and TV->AVR with optical)
Using this mode you cannot pass DTS and Dolby, since this is not supported currently. You have to make sure DTS and Dolby support is not checked.

This exact configuration has worked quite nicely since at least 0.9.22 (this is the exact setup that I run with the beta software). And now it doesn't work? That's not good.

@Eli "since this is not supported currently"
Currently as in the current release (1.1.0) we all have or currently the new one that is coming (1.1.1)?
If the new release doesn't support Boxee->TV->AVR I guess this is the issue to be fixed http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-9761 . This has always worked ever since I've had my BB... please fix.

I'm glad to hear this was working before, since we never added any support for this. When using this setup, do you still get the warning "Format not supported" when checking for support on the the audio settings?
The fixed version I'm referring to is 1.1.1 which is due is a couple of days. It is already verified by some users to fix the "Failed to initialized audio device". I will look again into the S/PDIF TV passthrough issue.

HDMI passthrough to TV SPDIF for DD worked for me before and has been broken since this most recent update and it is also still broken with the 1.1.1 update soft release. However the error message about "Failed to initialize audio device" has gone away. I have changed my setup to output optical to my receiver with DD/DTS checked and I am now getting DD and DTS from my files, however I have no sound from Netflix.

I also got a message from Marcel, installed new fw, rebooted. And it did not fix the sound issue. Now when I check the DD and/or DTS marks in the system setup, I get 'Warning' instead of 'Error'. And still no sound in the movies unles I uncheck both DD and DTS boxes. After that I get two channels, my receiver shows PCM icon... FW 1.0.4 plays it fine in the same setup, my receiver is happy with DD icon in this case. SO, it did not fix the problem for me. Do I need to do a factory reset and try again? I am confused to see that the new fw helped Mario...
