Description
Since the latest update, all 2 channel PCM is output as the fornt left and front right of a 5.1 dolby digital stream.
This means AV receivers cannot process this correctly and use any dolby pro-logic encoding on the stream, rendering 4 speakers out of a 6 speaker system useless

Just wanted to chime in on this issue - and it IS an issue. No one wants this to stay enabled. This functionality does NOTHING positive for ANYONE. Please put it back the way it was (and should be) by outputting stereo audio as STEREO audio. Thank you.

I vote to change this back too. I don't know why anyone would want this. Please, put this back.
Also, please think about consulting with your userbase via votes or threads on the forums about these type changes before going ahead and blindly implementing them.
**EDIT**
One other note and this is HUGE to me, now when I get a PCM source that is forced to be 5.1, I get NO SOUND OUT OF MY CENTER CHANNEL. This is the most annoying thing about this.
Seriously, what were you thinking with this change???

WTF this really needs to be corrected. I can no longer use dolby pro-logic II with my receiver for 2.0 audio. I will be very angry if I have to wait months for you to fix something that you should not have been messing with to begin with. Why did you make this change anyway?

This is a tragic, tragic feature. Users with a stereo only setup won't notice a difference (so WTF do it) but users with a multichannel setup will notice a NEGATIVE difference, any auto channel expansion schemes (like dpl2) will be thwarted!
It's overall a net NEGATIVE for users - I just don't see any upside here at all. Am I crazy or just dumb?

I'll have to use another device for my Netflix viewing now. The voices don't even come out of the center channel like they are supposed to with how this is setup. I'm surprised they did not know the effect this would have. Putting the stereo PCM in a DD 5.1 signal created the same problem back in the 90's. I can understand when I ran into the issue in the mid to late 90's but not in 2011. In 2011 this should not have been done.

So how long would fixing something like this take? Because I refuse to do the update if I'm going to lose the capability to change the 2 channel AAC audio for most of my viewing material to DTS Neo 6 and get full even though faked surround sound.

Hi everyone,
We've made some changes to the audio. These are all mentioned on the release notes. The changes are due to the license agreement signed between dlink and Dolby:
- all 2 channels PCM audio in now output as dd 5.1 when the receiver is capable. It will not mix into 5.1 but will stay 2 channels as the original input.
- Dolby truehd is decoded only to 2 channels. We will not decode to multi PCM as before. This should not affect bitstreaming.
Regarding Netflix, we plan to move to dd soon, so hopefully this will help.
All other sounds settings should work as before. If you're getting any issues please let me know, or report on boxee forum/jira.
Eli."

Can Boxee please comment. Is this true - if so, there will be no fix version as boxee's hands are completely tied, legally.
If this is not true, then why are boxee staff misleading the public?

My receiver processes audio differently depending on the type of stream coming in. It has a mode optimized for great stereo audio (music) output and one for surround sound (movies) output. And I don't want my receiver to switch to a (for music) inferior output setting because of such a dumb decision.

Why would you output 2 channel pcm as 5.1 DD?
If anything you would output it as 2.0 DD.
At least that would make some sense. but putting a 2 channel signal in a 5.1 wrapper makes absolutely zero sense.

This is crazy! 5.1 setups are specifically designed to do dialog out of the center channel. If we can't remix sound to the center channel many movies will not be watchable.

Please don't change audio formats unless it's for DOWN-SAMPLING multichannel to 2 channel. Going the other way doesn't make any sense whatsoever at the source. It removes the ability for most (dare I say all?) pre-amps and processors to properly deal with the 2 channel material and apply their own processing.
This change was apparently to "fix" an issue with some Sony receivers. Obviously it's short-sighted because it's going to cause problems for an even greater number of people.
The only people that will not be affected by this are those using only 2 speaker systems, such as connected directly to a TV or older stereo/receiver.

This change makes Netflix and Vudu unwatchable for stereo and/or pro-logic encoded material. Center channel is muted, and dialog is lost/muddled in the other channels. Also, please comment on the Dolby licensing question, as Dolby should have nothing to say about how existing 2 channel PCM material (i.e. flac or mp3s from our private collections) is handled by the Boxee. If this is a fix for specific Sony receivers, then it should be an *option* so that *only those people* who own such a receiver need turn it on.

Please revert this change or do something to fix it. The sound quality going from PCM 2 channel stereo over to this DD royally messed up audio quality for us with Matrix options in our Receivers (everyone with a recent receiver has this). As others have said now center channel is gone for the 2 channel audio which seems like a foolish move for a box designed to watch movies in conjunction with receivers supporting 5+ speakers. So we had 3 channels sometimes more in 1.0.4, and you stuck us with 2 in 1.1!
On a side note, now even though my box goes into idle (screensaver shows), the front green logo never dims and is now also a PITA even though my receiver is now on tv vs boxee. Maybe it's not related but the front green logo used to dim 5-10 mins after switching the HDMI inputs on my receiver to something other than the BB. Now it doesn't dim at all and I'm probably sucking down more juice AT IDLE! lol

Additionally, I would think that this would make playback of non-DTS 24/96 audio files completely pointless over ANY interface. If you've got a 24/96 FLAC or a 96Khz AAC file, for example, I would think that Boxee will now not only covert it in a lossy fashion to DD, it will actually downsample it to 48khz! After all of this is done, you might as well just be playing back MP3s! Absolutely ridiculous.

As a workaround this worked for me. When you are going to play something that you know this will happen to go into the settings and untick 'Dolby Digital capable receiver'. I now get a PCM signal out to my receiver which I can treat how I used to.
My setup is HDMI to TV pass through optical to receiver. Everything 2 channel was coming out the fake DD5.1 on my amp even the menu clicks. As soon as I unticked the setting the menu sounds went to PCM stereo and so did everything else. Just need to remember to tick it again when watching a true DD source.
Hope this helps some Netflix/music lovers out there.

@Scott F - yes its a huge pain and we should never have got into this situation, its ridiculous! I can't see how it ever got through testing unless it was tested just on a TV. It's instantly noticeable if you have the menu click sounds on. I can't believe you can just choose to ignore Pro Logic encoded files let alone send out any other 2 channel track as a fake DD5.1 track. I'm a supporter but this along with messing up my DTS pass through is really disappointing.
I hope the long winded workaround can at least help some people until we get this fixed.

@yuvalt
Thank you for the update that gives us an estimated timeframe.
With that info I will hold off getting a Roku to replace my BB for access to pandora and Netflix with the proper audio output.

@yuvalt The thing that blows my mind is why you guys can't make these changes OPTIONAL... A simple checkbox in the OPTIONS menu would solve all of these problems.

I have sent 3 emails to join the early access team.. Describing experience with NDA's, home media software I have worked on, beta groups I have done and even home theater equipment I have worked with pre release.
Not one email back. Not even a no thanks.

@jared - we are trying to find the right balance between the amount of settings and what is actually useful. We want to keep the product as simple as we can.
@haveringcottage - we do not discuss the relationship between our partners over public forums. If indeed it was discussed, then it was a mistake.
@phat - I apologize. I recommend you send an email to marcel@boxee.tv directly. Let me know if you do not hear back from him. Sorry.

Either send it out as DD2.0 or just plain old PCM. I *pay* for Netflix and vudu - please don't break them.
