Audio doesn't play right away

Description

playing a video file from local or online, the audio does not start immediatly, and only starts after ~2 seconds.

user report 1:
using 1.5.0.22823
When you start a movie there is no audio what so ever for 2-4 seconds and then it kicks in. This is regardless of file being played or if its a previous file that was played half way. This is very bad when TV Shows start without opening credits and the first 4 seconds are missed and you are forced to rewind.

This is not new and has happened ever since 1.2.1 and happens on both my BBox. I with surround sound system and one connected to the TV via HDMI and using TV speakers.

user report 2:
This happens from several places, but a quick test is the Twit app and the "Macbreak weekly" podcast, it starts with a host speaking so its evident the sound is gone. If he says "Hello and welcome to Macbreak weekly" - the audio is "..lcome to Macbreak weekly"

I'm running 1.0.4.17443 and am still having the issue. If anything, the audio appears to be a little more delayed in starting. I have the audio output set to all, was going to try and be specific in the output type and see if that made a difference.

Well, the box claims its using 17443.

However, inspired by Joshs comment above, if found out that this problem apparently seems related to the audio settings in system. By playing around with the audio settings in prefs/system it is possible to make the audio play at once. (Setting it to all, retains the delay)

and playing H264 video streams such as College Humor, Revision3, TED etc.

I am having this issue too. But only with digital audio. When just playing normal 2.0 non AC3 or DTS audio, the audio starts immediatly. On AC3 or DTS, the sound takes a few seconds. This is what I reported in my issue that is (i presume wrongly) defined as duplicate. Are you guys having the same problems?

I have just been updated to 1.1.1.19092 and it seems even worse. Previously the audio would start immediately if I had the audio output set to HDMI instead of All Outputs, but now even with HDMI selected there is a delay before the audio starts.

same for me on 1.1.1.19092. it only seems to happen on video via internet or network shares. I've only played one movie off usb lately and it didn't have the issue

Hopefully they'll fix this next firmware, at least I hope so, it's got to do with the sound code, if they only kept the same sound code as the factory setting, there wouldn't be any problems.

Had this issue since fw 1.1.1.19092. Usually on files that are in mp4/m4v format. Like downloaded web series or online clips.

I am experiencing this on Flash videos since firmware 1.1.1.19092. Video playback appears to start immediately, but sound playback is delayed by a second or so.

To be clear, still present in the 1.2 RC beta - 1.2.0.20151. This is easily replicated, I think present for all users.

Would be nice to see this fixed in time for 1.2 FINAL.

Heck no I'm not using betas anymore. They always seem to change something for the worse or requiring 5 more clicks to get done. It happens when it happens, and I re-report the bugs.

Because it's not happening on firmware v1.2.1.20411 (per his comment) which people aren't running (yet) so they're still seeing the problem. Basically, it's fixed in an upcoming release.

Tried 1.2.20451, and it's still broken, and broken even worse than before. Instead of 2 seconds of audio silence, it may now be closer to one second - at the beginning of a clip. But now it's also a problem on the back-end of the video - you get trailing silence at the end of the video now too, where that was not an issue before.

Same problem for me, most of the time this is not an issue, but with episodes that start right away without an intro, sometimes 1-5seconds of spoken language gets dropped.

I noticed that sometimes the effect is inverted. By this I mean that sometimes after starting playback the audio directly starts playing and the video isn't shown for the first couple of seconds. It just shows the screen that was visible at the moment that playback is started.

The video then starts playing in sync after a couple of seconds.

Hopefully this gives you a better grip on the causes of this issue.

This is the 9th most voted for open issue. Of those 9, only 2 of them look like actual "bugs" and the rest seem more like feature requests. Why is fixing this (and that other audio problem) not the top priority of the Boxee team???

Could be that it's an elusive bug. Sometimes it's really difficult to track em down. But I agree, this one is greatly impacting my happiness with the product.
