Description
When watching a video over the share, the video will just stop every 5-10 minutes, and you are turned to the file system menu. No error message or anything is shown to indicate an error occurred. One episode, it only happened once or twice, but some episodes it happens 15-25 times. The show can immediately be restarted, but it will keep happening.
It feels almost like a network disconnect, except that I am wired and should not have any disconnects.
This only happens with files on a network share. (USB files play fine.)

I also have this problem...only when wired(on my DLink DGS-1005G switch connected to my wireless router). When I switch to my wireless router(DLink DIR-655) the problem disappears. I thought maybe it was the switch...are both your network share and your boxee box connected to your main router? I'll try a few combinations and I can attach debug logs later tomorrow.

Thanks Craig,

If you think it's a matter of connection problems, maybe the Boxee could tell us there was a connection error? Seems like we should see an error message if there was an error.
I rewired my home with new cat6 cable today. Will let you know if the problem persists.

This happened again tonight when I was watching House MD. Then I watched "Best of the Best" (mp4 format) from a share, and it happened every few minutes. It ruined the movie. By the time the movie was over, I was so frustrated I was glad to see it over. I did not count, but I bet the video stopped playing 30 times or more. I will attach a log file.
Keep in mind this happened back when I was using "Ethernet over powerline", so I rewired my home with brand new cat6 cables, and it is still happening. I then added a switch and put only my PC and Boxee on it, and that did not help, either.
I feel very strongly this is a Boxee problem and not a network problem. I have no problems with any other devices on my network.

I don't know which file has all the errors I experienced tonight, so I included all 3 that Boxee generated for today. One of them should have *many* errors where a movie called "Best of the Best" stopped playing repeatedly. Also, the TV series House MD stopped a few times tonight as well.

there is a current limitation of closing idle connections which will occur if you PAUSE the playback.
Playing a video from your local network and performing a long (few minutes) pause will close the connection.
Resuming the playback will continue to play few more seconds from the buffered video and then exit the playback.

This not at all what I'm seeing.
I am NOT pausing the video.
Last night I watched a 40min TV episode. Every ten minutes, almost to the second, the playback just stopped. Boxee remains unresponsive for several seconds at this point. Then I'm able select / play / resume.
This happens with every local file I watch, Boxee connected wirelessly, shares are wired on Windows Home Server.

Yes, Darcilicious is correct. This has NOTHING to do with pausing the video. This happens randomly when you are just watching normally. (My Boxee is connected via wired cat6 and this still happens.)

Hi
I have also this problem. I have just bought the Boxee Box and I can´t play any of my movies. They all stop playing and quite to the movies menu.
My setup is Netgear CG3100 as a modem/router and Excito B3 as a server and Boxee Box. The B3 is wired to the CG3100 and the Boxee is wired to the Cg3100. On the B3 are all of my movies and the Boxee finds them through the SMB protocol. The Boxee can identify almost all of the movies and it can connect to the internet.
All of the movies I have tried stops playing after 10 - 20 minutes. I have tried the version 1.0.3.17127 and RC 1.0.4.17248 with no luck. With the SMB I have tried both a password protected connection and a open connection with no difference. I have never paused a movie.

One of these two files I'm uploading right now contains my viewing of a movie called "Open Range". It was quite the nightmare, with MANY interruptions of the movie due to this problem.
I hope this error is a priority for Boxee, as it is a complete disaster for us trying to watch movies across the network.
My equipment:
DLINK 2209 switch
Linksys WRT610n router
Synology 1511+ NAS
all cat6 cable
As I stated above, I also had this error before the switch, before the cat6 cable, and also before the NAS device. I was just sharing the video from my computer's hard drive and the same error would occur.

edit: This is possibly a cooincidence, but I never had this issue when boxee was connected to the router wirelessly. I'll try disconnecting the cat-6 cable tonight and see if the video playback gets fixed.
I'm having same situation as Cage Gecko (http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-7777?focusedCommentId=36948&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#action_36948).
Had boxee since pre-order, never had this problem until a few days ago. Network setup is: drobo FW800>mac mini SMB share>Airport wireless N router>cat-6>boxee box.
Boxee generally stops playing local files without error message about every 4-5 minutes. Often becomes unresponsive for 10-20 seconds at the Browse Local Files screen.
My firmware is most recent available.

I seemed to have fixed the problem on my side. I had UPnP turned on my NAS, and once I turned it off. I was able to watch a whole movie with no breaks. So if you have any UPnP, or any other services on your network, turned them off and try watching a movie, see if it still stops.

My "exit events" have been happening consistently now, 2-5 minutes apart. My Boxee was unwatchable at this point, so yesterday my Apple TV 2 with XBMC already installed arrived from ebay ($130). I figured I'd do some testing. It's been playing now for a total of about 7 hours, not once has my video stopped! Looks like this is clearly a Boxee problem.

Since we've received no feedback (except one comment above, suggesting it might be a network problem), my guess is that they haven't actually duplicated the problem yet, so that estimate above of "Fiona 1.1" is not in stone.
I had decided to scrap my Boxee for the time being, but it just hit me that I should move it out to the home theater. I'm going to try it wirelessly for a while and see how that goes. I've heard this problem does not occur wirelessly.

The developers have never provided "status reports" through here. The fact that Boxee's official tracker is as open as it is for a commercial venture is pretty darn amazing but they have not ever used this to provide "status" other than to ask for more information, clarification, or log files. Folks have posted tons of logs, it's unlikely they need to replicate the problem directly; and if they do need more logs, I'm sure they'll ask for them as they have in the past for other issues.
And for the record, the problem occurs wirelessly as well as I see it and my box is connected wirelessly.

Oh, I never expected weekly or even monthly full fledged status reports. I just worry that no response, or responses like the one above suggesting that it might be a network problem, could mean that the problem is not being seriously looked at. I don't know if they consider 47 votes significant, but I hope so!

Did not have this issue, then upgraded my D-Link 655 wi-fi to the latest firmware. Because I always have to change something, I turned on UPNP and Multicast Streams (under Advanced/Advanced Network in the D-Link 655 admin web configuration). Had this problem for over a week. Drove me crazy stopping movies on the file share every 5-10 minutes. Since the change, movies on my WD NAS are working fine. Haven't taken the time to figure out which option fixed it. I'm not using UPNP and I'm not sure multicast is not working through the Internet anyway. No loss with both off.

Out of curiousity, I went back and checked. My multicasting has been off the whole time. My upnp I have tried on, tried off, and changed a lot of times, so I can't really say that's had an effect, either.

Okay, I don't think it's just luck... I moved the Boxee to my home theater, which is just about 20 feet from my PC with no walls in-between, so I decided to run it wirelessly. It's been running 3 days now with no stoppages! Not one problem.

And more bad news... I put the XBMC where I used to have the Boxee, and now the XBMC has started stopping right in the middle of video.... aaargh. I have upgraded my router, went to cat6 cable, and introduced a switch, and the problem persists with BOTH the Boxee Box and the XBMC, but only when the device is in my bedroom. That is at the end of a 100 foot run of cat6 cable. I had this same problem when I was trying to use ethernet over powerline. In fact, all my equipment has been changed out, and the problem persists anyway! I am at a complete loss.

Please ignore my prior post saying the XBMC had the same problem. What it was doing was the Apple TV was trying to connect to Apple for an update. This is fixed now and the XBMC isn't having any more trouble. Looks like it is just the Boxee device, which is still working perfectly when *wireless* for me.

Issue is duplicated on my network. Problem surfaces while using Netgear WNDR3700 wireless N on wpa2 (aes). Playback will stop without warning or error message. The boxee is temporarily unresponsive to the iphone boxee remote app. I believe this would help strengthen the argumebt of a network drop as indicated by the logs other users have uploaded. When I switch the network encryption to WEP, the problem resolves itself. I play most of my movies from a NAS and as such I'm not fond of leaving my network essentially unprotected with WEP. Not to mentn the lower bandwidth associated with not being able to run on the N specification.

Bad Muts, from your log, it looks like you are experiencing a crash and not a playback failure.
please switch to DEBUG mode and create a new issue along with a DEBUG log so we can better identify the problem.

looking at the attached logs of Craig Brady, Stephen Robbins, Brian Kiser
Boxee is querying feed's status during playback. this is a behavior which was already removed for 1.1 version.
for example, during playback Boxee sends requests to
http://app.boxee.tv/api/get_recommendations
http://app.boxee.tv/api/get_queue
http://app.boxee.tv/api/get_applications
At 1.1.0.18xxx, Boxee no longer sends these requests during playback and that means that network connectivity is more free for playback only.

I'm attaching two log files, not sure which captured the issue. The video stopped almost exactly half through at 23 minutes and some odd seconds. It would be the second of two videos played ("Body of Proof") across either log and after going into debug mode, rebooting and playing the first video fine all the way through (tv show "Castle"). At a guess I'd say it's in this log file: boxee.1302064780.3812.tar.bz2
Let me know if you need anything else, Rafael :)

thanks very much darci, looking at the log, seems like file scanner is processing folders and it should not do run during playback.
there is about 20 seconds of background tasks which could be affecting the network utilization and causing the playback to halt.
20:58:23 - 20:58:43
as a temporary workaround, I would change the File sources scanning to ONCE.

Scan ONCE doesn't help either :(
Not sure where but watched an episode of Castle, Body of Proof (I think), and maybe Burn Notice, all of which stopped halfway through.

Still having this issue quite a bit, the Box is connected over 11n to an E3000 with an attached USB drive, latest firmware installed. If I try to load the film up again right when it happens, Boxee'll hang for a couple of minutes.

Hi Rafael,
Here's what I did last night:
1) Removed ALL sources from Boxee
2) Navigated to Files>>Network>>Babyface>>Videos>>CurrentTV
3) Started The Vampire Diaries ep16, it played without stopping until the last 3 minutes
4) I restarted and finished that video
5) Started The Vampire Diaries ep17, it stopped once, maybe twice
New logfiles attached. Check timestamps between 10:00p-10:30p.

Can we get an update on this issue? This is still a major problem - and nothing seems to be done?
The box has been on the market for a long time now, and it still isn't ready for normal use. Is this really how you wanna treat the first-movers that helps make your product a success ( at least from the sales perspective)..

Running 1.1.0.1896 version and the issue is still there. I believe I first started having it with the netflix firmware 1.0.4.17443. Starting from 1.1.0.18743 I lost the ability to resume the video from crashed point. When the video closed unexpectedly I used to be able to click on the video and resume video option was there. After crash, I have to fast forward to the crashed location to resume now.
Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide. Last time I enabled debugging, oddly I was able to watch the whole (previously watched) video without crashing.

Same issue and Boxee box version as Aleks. I just started streaming over a wired connection (vs. normally using my USB drive, but it's full now) - playing TV shows from the Files section. Shows will just stop as if it's the end of the video. It goes back to the list of files.
When I go to play it again, it will have the proper resume time, but it starts from the beginning instead of resuming from where it left off.
It's completely random.. it doesn't happen all the time, so I'm not sure if a debug log will help.
Rafael - you're wanting us to create a new issue for the same issue people are experiencing in this issue?

Jason, if you're testing a newer version (e.g. you're on the early access testers group and using v.1.1.0.xxxxx) then yes, you should file a new issue. If you're not, you should wait for the May release/update and verify that it's still a problem on that release.
Posting about this issue when using v1.0.4 is pointless.

Not to be rude or anything - but as far as i can see in the comments, nothing has been done to actually correct the error. The suggested work-around (rafael 06/Apr/11 10:43 AM) has been commented as not working. Since then no word from Rafael (or Eli to whom it was assigned to begin with), until now - when the comments has suddenly become confusing, and the issue closed ?
Sorry - but i'm just really really really frustrated right now. From where i see it, it seems the issue has been closed, hoping no one will bother with opening it again!
Maybe you have really found the problem and corrected the code - and in that case let me say thanks and sorry for bothering you. But that is sadly not the impression i get when i read the comment from Rafael (08/May/11 4:04 AM).

Hi Jesper,
To address your comments more directly: note that until today's (May) firmware update, there had been 4-5 Early Access release versions where folks continued to report on this issue and Boxee continued to work with folks on it. At some point in that process, it becomes meaningless to report about the issue in the then current publicly available version (v1.0.4.xxxxx).
Hope this helps!

Hi darcilicious/rafael,
Under the assumption that my comment: "Running 1.1.0.1896 version and the issue is still there. I believe I first started having it with the netflix firmware 1.0.4.17443." caused the issue; I want to clarify that I am running the early release version 1.1.0.1896. I wanted to communicate that I did not always have the issue and first started occurring on my setup in/around 1.0.4 release. I hope this makes it more clear.
As a side note; last weekend I have reverted to factory settings and upgraded to early release version without my settings then re-synced the library. Issue is still applicable.

Please note that since version .18851 I am no longer prompted to resume the video where playback stop so now it's moved from annoyance to not wanting to use Boxee at all for local content. I think this shouldn't wait until 1.2 to get fixed given that resume is no longer happening.
New debug logs with 1.1.0 final coming shortly.

Around 17:29 I started up Castle 2009.S03E22.mkv. Sometime after 9 minutes and before 19 minutes (I'm guessing 10!) video playback stopped.
Previous to this video, I also played Game of Thrones.S01E01.mkv, an hour long video. I don't know how long it played but it was a lot longer than 10 minutes (pretty close to the full hour if I had to guess).

So why is Boxee losing its network connection? Is it the WAP do you think?
And why don't I get the Resume option anymore?

This is not related to WAP. It's a bug with SMB that we're looking at:
17:39:44.0431 T:3035614096 M:478134272 ERROR: Read - Error( Connection timed out )
For some reason SMB timeout the read operation, and the file close.
The resume bug is a different issue that we'll fix

I hate to add to the chatter, but I feel compelled to post a note here. I am very disheartened to see this issue closed, then reopened, then closed again. Rafael, I say this with great respect, but it seems to me that you are very dismissive of this problem. There have been references made by you on this page where you seem to think this is just a network problem. Let me assure you--this is not a network problem. I had this problem on a reliable network, but I ended up replacing my 1) router, 2) network cables, 3) source for my files, and the problem persisted. The problem ONLY happens with my Boxee Box. I took my Boxee Box off my wired network and replaced it with an XBMC device, and XBMC has worked perfectly for months now.
So I understand this is a difficult problem for you to duplicate. I will be glad to do any testing you need done in order to fix this problem, because it is absolutely FATAL to people experiencing it. It makes the Boxee Box entirely unusable.
So please... let me know if I can provide more logs or perform specific testing that would help you deduce this problem.

Having the same problem myself. Happens streaming from an external drive connected to my Airport Extreme. Also happens when streaming from Netflix and Revision3. I've attached my DEBUG log above.
Also just uploaded a DEBUG log where the same thing happens while watching streaming video from Revision3.

Was playing an MKV of Doctor Who when the video cut out just a few minutes in. Here's the log from Boxee.
UPDATE: Just wanted to add a workaround/fix that I found involving the setup of my network. Check out my final post on this thread:

Hope that helps someone else who is experiencing this issue.

Only Purchased the Boxee Box Yesterday and this issue is already happening, get half way through watching a TV Show then stops and goes back to the menu and unable to resume play, this is also on a wired connection and playing direct from a Hard-Drive connected via USB so network should not even enter into the equation. My Seagate media player worked fine and still does!!!! FIX THIS NOW

Simon,
"FIX THIS NOW"?
Demanding things is childish and immature. As you can see by the comments in the ticket, they're working on it, so have patience.
It sounds like you have another issue since you're not playing through the network. So you should either search for a similar ticket or create a new one, with a less demanding and annoying tone.

Jason,
I believe Simon is just frustrated that this hasn't been fixed yet. Maybe he could have written it in a nicer way - but demanding what you have paid for is quite understandable in my book.
Personally i have had the box for something like 6 months, and apart from the first few days or weeks, it is mostly collecting dust now. The reason is this issue alone. I have had many d-link products (mostly routers etc.), and have always been happy - but the lack of a solution to this issue will make me think twice before buying d-link again.

I still experience this problem on my boxee box.
I share my files from a samba share hosted on a Debian (squeeze) machine and I have no problems when connecting to this machine and streaming movies from either my windows 7 pc or my mac snow leopard machine.
I have turned of upnp on the network and that have made the drop outs happend less often, but they still do happend once or twice during a 2 hour movie.
I've attached the debug log from my Boxee box and I also have a debug log available from my Samba server if you need that. (Can upload it if requested).

I hope this really is fixed. I do not know myself as I am running Boxee Box wireLESS now and the problem does not manifest. I can say that my wired XBMC device replaced my wired Boxee Box in the bedroom, and the XBMC has been flawless. I'd like to get another Boxee Box for my daughter's room, but this bug is so incredibly bothersome (bothersome may not be the right word--it makes watching videos *impossible*) that I hesitate to buy another. Can any other users confirm that the bug does indeed seem to be fixed?

Well - thanks for nothing D-link!
I am now the happy owner of a WD TV Live device.. And you know what? It can actually play my video and music files without problems!! The included apps (10 or so) works smoothly. It might not have pretty eye-candy and a 150+ apps, but it works!
There's no argument that the Boxee Box has way more feautures and more intuitive menus etc. - but as long as the basic funktionality is flawed it doesn't really matter.
Goodbye Boxee Box - my patience has run out. I do hope that you get the errors fixed - at least for the sake of all the users with more patience than me.
