Agreed here, I have tons of small clips my kid likes to watch, and the Popcorn i would just press "play" and it would play from current and then all files. Now on Boxee, the workaround was to create a m3u file then play this.
When browsing music files, you will get track x/y - when browsing video and pressing "play" i'd like the same, playing video x/y of folder.

This is a killer for me. This is my 6th media player (MediaGate - 3 versions, WDTV, HDX1000) and the first I have encountered that doesn't allow this functionality. I have folders full of music video files which I would like it to just player (ideally with a random/shuffle option, but I can live without that and create a playlist if I have to), series of kids cartoons which are like 5-10 mins each and the kids just want to start at the top, multi-part movies, and just folders of random hove videos.
I very nearly returned the player today (purchased yesterday) and suffer 15% return penalty from the store I got it from but decided to see if there are options. I really hope this happens soon. Until it does my trusty HDX1000 is being put back on the main TV and this moved to the one that is never used.

Much needed especially for viewing home movies.
Pressing the play/pause button would be a great implementation of this feature. List of videos from camcorder/mobile phone, pressing play results in all videos playing one after another.

Can we please see some progress on this issue. What we desire is a simple feature that already exists for audio files, i can't imagine it's that difficult in comparison to some of the other issues the boxee team is handling. It would be nice if we can ad least see some progress for this issue, such as being added to Fiona 1.2, or 1.3.

I too vote for this. If you're playing files in a folder, boxee should automatically play the next file in that folder. It seems odd, Boxee uses Youtube leanback, so videos on youtube play in queue. I have a lot of (hundreds) cartoon "shorts", about 5 to 10 minutes each my daughter likes to watch. It's annoying to have to be ready every 5 minutes to go to the next file, if I am trying to get other stuff done around the house at the same time. Please Boxee team, implement this simple feature.

There are two separate issues being discussed here. From the OP, #1 is the first issue and should be treated automatically. If a single movie is split over multiple files, Boxee should play them all back to back as it has recognized that it is a multi-part movie. If this doesn't work, and Boxee has properly identified the movie is multi-part, this should be split off into its own bug ticket.
#2 is a feature request for something like dynamic playlist and to be properly implemented it shouldn't matter if files are in the same folder or not. It would in fact make no sense to have the same-folder limitation since Boxee's UI metaphor is not about folders. This should work with movies or any content and can be implemented itself as a number of features.
For items that are listed together in the UI, such as TV episodes, there can be a Play All item in the options menu. Additionally, when selecting a single file, the option to "Play all remaining episodes" could be used to play the selected episode and additional ones in order.
Watch Later items which are listed together should be able to be played sequentially with a similar option when clicking on any title.
For movies or content that is not already listed together, they can be added to Watch Later or optionally a new dynamic playlist or Queue is created, Yes, I know the Watch Later is the new version of the former Queue. This dynamic version would be temporary and should be wiped any time the box is restarted. Basically you just "Add to Queue" (or whatever Boxee would prefer to cal it, such as "Playlist") as many items as you want. Then from the top level menu (or Home Screen) you'd be able to enter this dynamic list, just like you can with Watch later, and start it up.

I dont need some fancy options for playing files, all I need is for my boxee box to simply playing the next video file in a folder so I dont have to manually switch to the next cartoon for my child each 5 minutes. This is a huge lack and makes my boxee box more than less useless for my use.

One way to solve the problem is for Boxee to automatically "stack" multi-part videos while it scans. This should not be difficult, especially if the files are named with an obvious convention such as "Rugrats Part 1," "Rugrats Part 2," etc. It could be set as an option under settings to "Automatically stack multi-part videos when detected."
At the moment, a reasonable workaround is to stack the videos yourself.

There is a very easy work around - create a .m3u playlist of the files in the folder then play that playlist. When the first item completes it automatically plays the second etc. .m3u files may be intended to music, but in a Boxee they do work on video content too.
Once you have created the file add the following as the first line in the file otherwise the Boxee fails to play any of the files when you select the playlist:
#EXTM3U

I would like to add my 2-cents on this as well. Ideally I would like there to be 2 built in play all options for both local movies and 3 play all options for local tv shows
option 1 - Play all unwatched
This would play all unwatched local movies in any order and unwatched local tv shows by season and then episode number
option 2 - Play all random
This would simply either play through all local movies at random or all local tv shows at random
option 3 - Play all current show or season
This would would either play all the seasons of a specific show in order or play through each episode of a specific season
these options can simple be added as two additional buttons either adjacent to where the current list view option button is located and be based on the current hierarchical location in the main library view you would have options 1 and 2, under a specific show you have option 1 and 3, and under a specific season you have option 3

I can't believe after 10 months and over 100+ votes this basic feature isn't implemented on the boxee. I was considering buying another one for my living room but decided not to if it takes this long to add such a *basic* feature that's still not assigned!
Hide
I doubt this feature not being implemented has anything to do with technical difficulty of implementing the feature. It might be more that the feature is typically desired by "pirates," since it can be used to play movies that have been downloaded in parts from YouTube. Boxee is trying to avoid the appearance of catering to those types of "unscrupulous" users.

Doubtful. I'm not doubting some people may grab multiple segments from YouTube, even though it would be entirely futile considering single file perfect transcodes are available all over the net.
As I've previously mentioned, designing a good system for accomplishing this feature is not that simple. It needs some thought and care to integrate with the rest of the software and with the roadmap. Unfortunately, people without design or development experience always think every idea is simple. Ideas are simple. Implementation isn't. :)
Boxee has a lot of work to do and time is finite. Prioritization of work is likely the reason this hasn't been addressed. It's also possible the low priority is simply based on the folks at Boxee not valuing the addition - this has been seen with other Jira issues/requests.

I have an HD camcorder for family videos (Canon Vixia HF200), and I extract all .MTS files from the AVCHD folders to my NAS for storage and network playback purposes (I do not preserve the entire avchd structure).
I also have a bunch of .MOV files from my iPhone and a still camera (Canon S95) with more family videos. And more MP4 files from a Flip Mino.
From ALL these devicez, each scene is stored as a separete file.
Without the ability to play these files sequentialy, I have to say that BOXEE BOX IS USELESS FOR WATCHING FAMILY VIDEOS.
PLEASE, PLEASE implemente this functionality ASAP!!!

Pretty disappointing to buy a Boxee only find that there isn't sequential video auto-play implemented yet.
Can someone from the product team please let us know if this will ever be implemented? I'm struggling to understand how something so basic is absent for videos but not for music.

Well, I thought I truly was nuts by phoning the 1-800 Boxee number nonstop, reaching Mumbai everytime. Thought I was going crazy, after all, who would make a media player and not have successive clip playing abilities? So I've given up and will return it tomorrow. I just bought it and have 14 days, so after 10 days of trying to figure out what the heck I'm missing by making my kids flip back and forth commanding "play" to each little clip, I conclude that Boxee does not care and after reading here can see that nothing will be done.
If you want to know the future, the past is a pretty good indication. This issue wont be resolved, so stop wasting your time like I did. This media player has frustrated me to no end. I give up. And I'm not a technical idiot either. Good luck to you all.
Goodbye Boxee. Can anyone recommend another media player that will play AVCHD clips successively........

Hello, I just bought a boxee to replace my PS3 as a media server and was shocked when I found out that this feature rich product is missing something as basic as this. Please make the system either automatically play everything in a folder until you stop it, or add a 'play all' button below 'play'. It's really annoying when you have a multi-part movie or if you just want to veg out and watch an entire season of something uninterrupted. I'm surprised that this has been open for a year...

It can't be *that* complicated, but it would bring huge value.
1. Manage and build video playlists.
Usable: from files in current folder
Want: from files in multiple folders
Need: Mix of local files ***and web links***, both video and music only
2. Play from playlist.
Usable: sequential
Want: shuffle
Need: choice of sequential, shuffle, random
Just think of the possibilities: your own Three Stooges festival; background TV; holiday marathon with every Christmas episode of South Park, Futurama, Simpsons, etc; Firefly marathon; ...

Wow, how many forums have I ready about this topic for Boxee. I hope Boxee realizes that this feature is much more requested than the mere 148 votes would suggest. Also, a lot of returned items too. I don't understand why this BASIC feature can't get resolved. I would imagine that the Boxee devs would get pretty sick and tired of a single play feature as well (unless they use ANY other set top box for their own personal use). I understand that there is a work around by creating a playlist. Why should I, as a user who has already paid $200, have to do this additional work for my entire library? I am very tempted to return my box unless I hear something in the next week that is actually getting worked on.

OK, unfortunately this feature is still NOT implemented in the version 1.5 (I checked the PC version, so it is likely it will also be absent from the BoxeeBox firmware 1.5).
*Boxee team*, could you PLEASE consider this feature, at least when the video files are played from the FILE BROWSER GUI? I mean, this could be the default behavior (play next item) when videos are played from the file browser GUI. This is really a simple change, a couple lines of code, and this would not need to be a configurable behavior (so no change in the settings GUI either).
If you do this VERY SIMPLE CHANGE, I believe that many users with a bunch of home videos (MOV/MP4/MTS) from their iPhones/Cameras/Camcorders would be VERY HAPPY about the possibility of using the BoxeeBoxes to play their (our) home videos.
Thanks.

How is Boxee supposed to become a mainstream product if they lack the most essential feature of a MEDIA PLAYER...Not just a file opening system. You MUST HAVE AUTO PLAY videos in a file, does anyone there have HD camcorders?? Seriously....this has been a issue for over a year and no commitment (or even a SIMPLE explanation!!!)...Really....no Really?? Does Boxee not want to succeed??? I actually returned my WD to purchase the BoxeeBox, but thankfullyI found this thread to confirm the issues I was encountering. Figured assuming it was my setup issue was a safe bet because surely a "robust" media play would have this BASIC feature. I can get Netflix movies from 5 different sources in my home already; therefore my solitary purpose was to watch the hundreds of hours of family video stored on my hard-drive. Even my camcorder plays each file consecutively.
I wish I could adequately articulate an analogy to summarize how abysmal the design is and the inept foresight (Clear Pespi anyone?? :)) It is like taking a VHS, playing the tape, then having to put another one in to finish the movie. How inconvenient? Obviously Boxee has no business savy or marketing, because if they do then their product manager should be fired!!! If this is all about attempting to reduce piracy, then this is a short sighted model. Boxee eventually wants to rent movies to generate revenues...correct?, well wouldn't you think the demographic that would purchase this expensive Media player(ish) item to watch home movies are just the type of loyal customers you want in your corner to build a brand??
I would have an Apple TV right now if it played AVCHD home videos, so as soon as the do, Boxee will be an antique commodore64. Go ahead, be complacent, how did that work out for Motorola with the RAZR and RIM Playbook???....news flash: not too good at all!!! Does anyone at boxee have a business degree? Get your geeky heads out of your A@# and take a moment to remove "coding blinders" and use some business savvy (if you want to succeed).
CAN SOMEONE FROM BOXEE PLEASE RESPONSE WITH USEFUL REASONING? Terrible customer service and complete disregard for the Customer!!!!

A "Play all" function is a must on a mediaplayer. I really can't believe that is wasn't implemented from the beginning... and STILL not after several fw-updates :( I suggest that the box automatically plays all movies within the folder if you hit the PLAY-button, and only plays the selected movie if you hit the OK-button. To skip to the next or previous file, you should simply just have to single click the right/left arrow on the joystick. If you want to ffw/rew just hold the button down for >0.5 sec or so. Other ideas is to do it by sw-buttons in OK-button menu, but that's not as good according to me. PLEASE work on this.

I agree with a majority of the comments here; I also cannot believe this feature hasn't been implemented yet! Almost every other media center solution I've tried offers such an option for a video playlist, with optional playback functionality. I unfortunately discovered this PROBLEM in the aftermath of purchasing a Boxee Box. Shame on me for assuming this would be resident by default. Anyway... On par with FoggyG's suggestion, pressing Play while on a folder would playback the entire folder. In addition, perhaps a playback menu could be summoned via long pressing Play on a folder. The playback menu can include: "Play All", "Play Random", "Play Unwatched", etc... If a folder contains sub folder(s), all files in all sub folders will be added to the continuous or random playback. This would be great for TV episodes. In fact, I am current doing this with Media Browser, which is an add-on for Windows Media Center. I would rather use Boxee full time, but won't until this get implemented. Damn, can't retire my clunky media center PC just yet. :-( I realize this ticket has been open for over a year, but I would really like to see this implemented in a timely manner. Thanks!!!!!

The ability to select an episode in a TV show list and have the Boxee continue to play the episodes one by one until manual intervention (and of course playing the next episode in season order, not at random) would be great.
This would score many points with my wife who is fed up with my 2 year old son shouting that his 11min episode of Thomas the Tank Engine has finished and he wants the next episode ;-)

Look, I'll settle for the most basic of features. No shuffling or other fancy stuff. Just don't make me have to sit with the remote and start each bl***y segment manually. It is somewhat offputting to be returned to the file index every 30 seconds...

I have to agree with the numerous other requests. I have several short video files and I would love to just hit play once and let them go. I've been a big supporter of Boxee/BoxeeBox for a while now, but I do have to say the the length of and the time this threat has been active is a bit disheartening. It's an issue that I've noticed in several different discussions about Boxee, so I really have to question why its implementation seems to have been ignored.

This feature should have been a staple in boxee box. Imagine having your iPod not selecting and playing the next song in your list. Alot of people here have over complicated this most basic feature. all the ideas are great however the ability to play the next item should have been as i said before a staple of playing files. even the most simplest of players has this, my seagate GoFlex® TV HD. I am returning my boxee box until this feature is in.
PS. you know social features and apps should have been on the back burner until your player of media files was solid and feature rich comparative to the competition that is available. It is an ugly mark on an otherwise beautiful product.

boxee doesn't give a f*cking shit about this f*cking feature. if the amount of votes and the length of time this has been unresolved and the lack of an "assignee" don't convince you, nothing will.

My box was past the return date allowed but my old xbmc finally gave out after 10 years (yes that supported auto play next) and I has to look for a replacement and was looking to upgrade my popcornhour c200 so I was in the market for 2 new media players. Guess who lost my business even though I had one already. Yes, Boxee wasn't even considered because they choose to ignor customers and can't even implement a single feature. It's been almost two years!!! Shame on you boxee.

Will not buy another boxee... Lack of simple features especially for the price. I can get a roku or half the price and do more of what I want. Seems boxee is only interested in focusing on development that they can charge for.... (hv antenna)

Guys, we really need this feature. I have so many videos from my camcorder which are small small clip. Currently I have to play them individually, this is very very frustrating. I can see this is not yet assigned to any one, there are 214 votes for this feature, do you want more votes ? What you want us [users] to do to make this your highest priority ?

Well ... It's been a long time since we're all following this thread, I'm fed up! I don't think the developers are in any way interested in implementing auto play next episode option, It will garbage all their initial development regarding "each episode IMDB detail before playing". I'm finally moving to Sony's Google TV, It has got the better remote (Back lit) Plus It has all the options you can think of, Same Price with better options. Adios Boxee! We had a good run so far, But we had our differences.

Please add this basic essential feature to boxee. It is absolutely astounding that it has not been integrated into the current updated system yet!!! You already have the basis for it in your music player code .. it would not taken even 10 - 15 minutes of a programmers time to implement! If more than one file exists in folder and play next = enabled : play next file!! how hard is that!?! the $50 dollar Astone player can do it and your box is 4x the price! WTF? Hey What about this... How about I write the code for you? how does that sound... And I wont charge for it either!? help me out here. You'd be doing us all a favor if you just finished this feature off.

I agree with everyone on here, it is a much needed and obviously much requested feature which surely wouldn't take you long to implement as you already do it for the music player.

I have, like so many else bought a Boxee to have control over my familys cam-corder recordings over the years. These are small clips arranged under one and the same folder, sorted by month. I got really dissapointed that this feature wasnt implemented. I now regret that I only checked witch fileformat boxee could playback and not how it could do it. Its now 1,5 years since this thread was started.
It would be nice if someone from the Boxee crew would comment why this case havent got high prioroty.
Sad to say but im not sure I would recomend anyone to buy a product like this from a company who does not listen to their customers.

Please get this as soon as possible, having to start every damn clip sucks. O.K. you can use playlists but then you have no idea which clip your watching and if you want to start watching clip 25 out of 100 then you really are up some kind of creek without any paddle. Implement an auto play next item for videos in a folder just like there is for music files and make the playlists visible so that its easy to choose which item in the list to start playing from.

also +1 for this, particularly in TV series, like if you watching episode 1 have it autoplay episode 2... and so on so on.
its a lot easier to pause the next episode if you dont want to watch it as opposed to going out, re-selecting, pushing play, pushing play, then your off.

count me in for this feature, I dont know if my vote will change anything looking at the way requests are being treated, but what the heck, am in! continuous play of video files in the same folder is highly requested, would love to see it in the next firmware update

Frankly, it's shameful that this feature is not included in any media player, let alone a standout product like Boxee. This is simply a must have.
Boxee is the only set-top media player I've tried/used that does NOT have this.

I just bought the boxee box and I'm quite happy with it but there is ONE big major thing which I really don't understand why this feature has not been implemented.
Since XBMC has this feature for YEARS now it's not possible to enqueue several video files to a playlist within boxee.
Examples:
1) I want to watch a movie which is split in 2 files: cd1.avi and cd2.avi. Both files are in the same folder. I start cd1.avi and expect to start cd2.avi automatically if cd1 is done.
2) I want to watch a season of my favorite tv show. All episodes are in the same folder and I start watching e01. When e01 is done I expect Boxee to continue playing the other files in the right order: e02, e03 etc.
XBMC's solution:
While browsing in library or file mode: right click (or context menu - "C") over a season/show/movie and select play, xbmc will then play all the files in order.
Also you have the option to select "add to queue" and every single file which is in the queue will be played after the other.
This is a big/major/epic fail, since boxee is based on XBMC. I also doubt this feature will take too much time to develop, since it's already there in XBMC!
I also mentioned in the settings (Media - Music) an option called "Auto play next item", which would solve the problem instantly for videos as well....
It would be satisfactory though, if the "watch later"-option would handle multiple files like I mentioned in my examples.
I'd love to read a statement from you guys.
Cheers
Ben
