Description
It would be great to have a customizable Home screen.
-ability to add shortcuts to things like Photos, Music, or perhaps a favorite App
-ability to remove unwanted shortcuts such as Friends, Watch Later, etc...
-ability to display recently added local media
-ability to display a History list
-ability to remove the random video clips that currently appear taking up half of the screen
Be creative... Make the Home screen amazing. Also make it easier to navigate back to the Home screen. The remote really needed a Home button.

Absolutely! As it stands now, this is the least used page on my Boxee Box. The only time I see it is after a reboot (a rare event). After navigating away from the home page, there's ZERO reason to navigate back to it.

Music really has to be in the main menu !! Photos perhaps also..
As for the video.. For those of us who use the box for our own media, having so much space for streamed stuff we dont have an interest in, on the primary home screen, seems crazy to me.

I wonder if it is possible to make it so the Menu button on the remote goes back to the Home screen if it was held in for a period of 3 seconds?

I agree that it seems there is a great loss of potential for the Home Screen to be much more useful. The links it pulls up are useless to me, and I would much rather see configurable links and shortcuts.
* Now that I am using a Harmony 1 remote with the BB I am happy, I never need to go to the Home Screen at all, it is wasted space as far as I am concerned. When, and if it becomes more functional I will re-visit it.

Indeed, drives me crazy how when I go back from say files, shows, or movies instead of going back to the home screen, I get the bull down top menu.
Should take you back to the home screen and yes it needs to be way more useful. The three random videos should be from my own collection. I'd say make them smaller and have five personally (even better would be to allow use to set amount).
Photos and music need to be there as well.

Completely agree with this. As it is now, the random videos just take up space and I honestly never click on them. Therefore, the only time I go to the homepage is when I turn the box on or when I want to see what is in my watch later queue.

1. A few Apps icons on homepage (user selected)
2. Thumbnail Recommendations should pull from my recently added local files, watch later videos, rss feeds, and maybe a trailer/ad once and a while but hopefully that's a feature we can turn off.

4. "recent posts" type scrolling li with recently added local videos

I agree, this would be definite improvement by making the home screen more personal. What I would like to do is take any APP, say Ted TV, Engadget, Navi-X and move the home screen, it would also be nice to move the Movie or show link there as well. This would definitely save load time of having to jump through different menus to get to your favourites. My choice in the morning is to turn on TV, with a change like this I probably would turn on BB Instead as i do not have to sit there and work my way through the menu system.

Just thought of something else. It would be nice to be able to add shortcuts to your shares that you can only access from the Files menu to the home page instead of the currently useless video links that I never watch. This would be helpful for people who have a lot of files they have to navigate to the Files menu to access since they don't get aggregated to either Shows or Movies. Being able to add those folders as a quick link on the homepage would be great as you could then access your favorite local content from the Shows and Movies icons as well as the shortcuts to your most commonly accessed network shares right from the homepage instead having to go to the Files menu.

I'd love to have access to my more commonly used apps, Watch Later & some sort of user defined RSS feed alone with the Icons for Shows/Movies/etc.
Also, a quick way to Toggle VPN (On/off & Multiple profiles) from the homescreen or dropdown menu would be amazing and incredibly helpful.

Yes, this is a biggie for the user experience of the boxee box. Very enoying that the videos on the homescreen takes so much space. The thing i miss the most is the abillity to add more folders to the homescreen. Would be super if you could add a folder for every person in the family. Maby even give the option to lock a folder. I don´t want to login logout for each member.

Or at least do it the way it was in the beta where there were 3 columns. They could get their advertising in with the recommended feeds, users could have their favorite apps or shortcuts and the watch later queue could be in the last column. This would also free up an icon up top where they could bring back music or photos to the home screen.

i'm going to wade in now. I feel qualified to comment now that i've bought my boxee box.
I love the 1.0 interface. it's much cleaner and less cluttered. I still use the 0.9 interface on three other HTPCs in my home, but the box is everyones favourite.
definitely add music and pictures to the front screen, but please don't clutter it up like the 0.9
progress doesn't necessarily mean "more features all on one screen" as far as i'm concerned.

That's why it should be customizable. Let power users who aren't intimidated by having a lot of information all on one screen and easily accessible put what they need on the Home Screen. For people who just want to keep it easy for family members or themselves to understand allow them to keep just the main icons and the suggested videos. Personally, I would like to see shortcuts to commonly accessed folders from the Files area, recently added media, and the watch list in the space where the currently useless to me suggested videos are taking up the majority of my screen. Then the Pictures and Music icons can come back as well as the clock and the weather without the need to bring up the menu.

I agree with Darian. If people like the current dumbed down set up great. I personally want more and .9 has/had it. It wasn't intimidating and it had a lot more usability and many more things were accessible via lesser click. The favorites bar on the homepage is sorely missed.
As it stands now, the home page is 100% useless. That just shouldn't be the case. The home page should be a central location and a HUB to what the USER wants. A favorites bar should replace that aweful and 200% useless row of that currently hogs the homepage. Let the user add favorite Apps, Movies, Shows, Websites, whatever to it. Also let the user put more on the homescreen, like it was before.
The more I type this, the more disappointed I get that the UI was overhauled in the first place. You shouldn't try to fix something that isn't broken.

Honestly I believe the new UI is just plan awful and boring. The old one had more interesting content on the home page. Now its just 3 giant videos that I am for the most part never interested in. I don't care if you show ads because I know you have to make money but I would like to have at least some place on the home page for customizable widgets. I just feel like the Boxee Box is trying to shove paid or featured content down my throat constantly.

I personally do not want to see ads. Ads are fine if you are getting something for free (i.e. Hulu) because there must be a revenue source somewhere. However, when you pay $200 for a Boxee Box, there's the revenue source.
To be honest, I'd just like to see a complete rip-off of XBMC. I have an XBMC device in my bedroom and am using the Boxee Box in my home theater, and XBMC blows away the Boxee Box when it comes to interface design. Skinnable, attractive, flexible, lots of options in how I want to display my files, pictures are retrieved no matter whether I am viewing in "library" or "file" mode.
Basically, just use many of the ideas that XBMC has already implemented successfully, and we'll have a winner in the Boxee Box.

Yeah, so far Boxee is customizable in painfully few ways...
Skin (or at least color schemes to the current skin) will be very much welcome as well.
The home screen also SHOULD be customizable - that's a must have feature!
I'm starting to feel forced to use/not use certain features / content and I'm sure it won't end well for Boxee, once users start feeling the same way...
PLEASE take some action - give the users a more customizable interface!

Shut up allen kacarik, the boxee team will deal with the important issues as they arise. Have some faith in the team! If you want a product where you will never see support or improvements buy something else or start posting useful comments.
I can guarantee the boxee team is working on a new homepage but obviously they are not going to release any details until it is perfected. The worst thing you can do in a company is send out info prematurely which im sure the team has already learned. It might not make it to the Boxee Box but who knows what the team has in store for the future. This team is made up of a few skilled developers and when you submit a ticket it gets handled by a direct dev. Please tell me another company that offers that kind of support!?
Keep up the fantastic work boxee team, you have made a ton of customers for life due to your level of support and we will follow you through every product you produce!!! Even if the boxee box gets outdated next year I will buy it as long as it is produced by the boxee team!

I don't know if its been mentioned before but it would be awesome to be able to theme the boxee box. I would love to be able to check out themes through an App in the Box and switch things up. This would also encourage developers to become more involved in the Boxee Box and its development.

@Jenna Ali SERIOUSLY. There was a cockfight on youtube for a short time and for some reason it was showing up on the boxee box home screen.
The parental controls are laughable on the Boxee Box. I am sure most parents would like to filter out more than just adult content which is the only option on the device.

I agree 100% the main screen and menu needs to be customizable. I still am suprised that Music is on the PC version, but not on the box itself.
For me we don't use the Social networking and therefore would love to remove it from the screen.
Also, allow the adding of customizable artwork for movies, almbum , and artist so I can remove all the blank tiles for artists and occasionally album art.

Thanks for the Link Darcillicious, that will do the trick.
I however think that Boxee should consider making this sort of thing a little easier on the user.
Something like another choice on the find info button that allows adding custom info right on Boxee and not the creation of extra files.
It would be much more user friendly, but thank you very much for the information.

Customise the home screen. As a new user, this is the worst thing about the entire system. I don't want a friends icon, never will, why should it have to stay there? Can't I use it for something I want, like oh I don't know, MUSIC! But more than that, remove or edit or change the MASSIVE tiles for featured content that I'll probably never click on.
Isn't the whole point to make it a more usable system? The software is free to download, so why lock down the box so much? Give us root access and let the community run with it.
Not only that, but customise everything. The shocking spacey wallpaper really needs to go!

This certainly has to be one of the most requested features in one way or another! To be able to quickly access apps/channels/music etc. that you really want to see/hear/fiddle with often is a necessity. To be able to set your own RSS for the video stream would be great too!

I really don't mind some space being used for Vudu ads or whatever that's fine with me even lets me know what new stuff is out. What I do mind is the wasted space there is plenty of space such as on the PC version for more options. I have to agree the home screen sadly fairly useless. It is simple and while that is nice just as soon as you go into one of the options it gets overtly complex, or you have to hit the menu button to pull up what you are actually looking for. I wish there were different selections for local TV and streaming TV, as well as local Movies and streaming movies. Moving back and forth between the two is clunky.

Yes, all good ideas! The current home screen is a joke. I never look at the advertised stuff that makes up 50 % of the screen. It could be interesting if the advertised stuff is not complete, utter garbage, like today.
Please make something usefull out of it.
An example, something usefull would be to see a shortcut list of tv shows or movies that are not viewed 100% so that you can easily continue them the next time you start up the box.

I agree about the customization. When they took the XBMC code, it sure would have been nice to keep the nice skins and such. But I guess they want advertising revenue from the stuff on the main screen. It's a little discouraging. I want to be able to show off my Boxee like I did my XBMC... kind of "make it mine," so to speak.

Counter to the vast majority of comments here, I am going to play devil's advocate.
Many of the comments on this ticket were written over the past 12-14 months before the UI with FW 1.5 became available.
With 1.5 with now the "Home Screen" Menu, and the "Home Pop-Up" Menu, i think care has to be taken here on what is requested, what issues still exist etc.
I will be the first to admit that Music and Photos should be visible on both Home Menus for those that want it (similar to the way that Live-TV is only visible for those that want it.)
But with the great new Home Pop-up Menu, once you are in the box, how often do you really need to go back to the Home Screen Menu. As such, what is the point in spending time customising it if it requires extra button clicks to get back there. (e.g. you would have to select "Home" from the pop-up, instead of going direct to your next media choice).
My suggestion therefore is to provide a level of customisation on what is the Icon menu list. e.g. the Friends to Files Icons. This would be easy to implement in the settings, as it would just be a list of check boxes, and you allow the user to select up to a certain number of Icons. In this list you could deselect Friends or Watch Later etc, and instead select Music or Photos.
Once set, only those Icons appear on both the Home Screen menu and the Home Pop-up menu.
As for fanart, or the "wasted video space" on the Home Screen menu, over time I believe the quality, regularly updating and interest level of the selected video/apps has increased drastically. So I actually enjoy it now, even though originally I never did. I can understand some people not wanting it still, but as any changes here would not be visible on the pop-up menu is it worthwhile focusing attention here?
Personally I think there is a compromise to be had here.
A minor change in customising the Icons to be selected in the Menu which would allow the Media Streamer to be tailed towards pure Video, or to Multi-media with Music and Photos as the user wishes, would appease a large portion of the user base. As well as probably increase the up-take of the boxee.
Then a suggestion would be to focus other development attention on fixing the other issues impacting upon the UI (e.g. sluggishness causes by media scanning etc).
Focus should be on simplicity of configuration and making it bug free and understandble to configure by the mass market.
Long term, by all means further customisation could be looked at, but its about prioritising.

Long term, by all means further customisation could be looked at, but its about prioritising.

Peter,
I agree with you. A compromise in this case is the best alternative. The team should iron out the nasty bugs first.
But... this is the third version of the UI and to be honest, the first UI version gave me (personally) all the options I needed. Easy and fast menu access, movies, pictures, music etc. and the option to add favorites.

I agree that the half window used with some kind of ad videos is a waste os space.
If you have children like me you are really missing the "two click" to access a video.
It would be very nice to have shortcuts to videos or apps or whatever we need to access without dive into menus and an infinity of clicks.
It is particularly useful if you need a quick access to an "unidentified" video, for example.
what makes me sad is that this feature already existed with the "shortcut" feature on previous versions.
this is the "top ten" feature request. The improvement of the 1.5 didn't solve the problem. I think that it has the same or even major priority of bug solving work.
that's it. my 5 cents.

As a new user who just bought a Boxee Box without trying out the software, I expected this feature. I am surprised that it is not already implemented, and absolutely floored to see that the Dev response has been to ignore this request. This may be a deal breaker for me.

What do you expect. All the top voted are simply ignored by Boxee.

According the last fire chat this is not happening now or in the future UI. Avner claims Boxee wants to simplify not give more choices. So goodbye to this option.

That's ridiculous! You'd think that with names like Apple, Google and Microsoft in the same game as Boxee they would want to listen to their customers.

This is my no. 1 issue with Boxee Box!!!!! I bought this wonderful little machine primarily to listen to music from my NAS drive. This it does with excellence, it is just to much work to get to the music folder. It MUST be possible to customize the Home screen, as to have a 'Music'-button!!!! Please make this a TOP-priority!
