Description

Video podcasts from Danish Broadcasting (DR) start to buffer after a few minutes (less than five).
Proper playback can't be re-established at all, once the symptom has appeared.

An example: http://vpodcast.dr.dk/feeds/soeindingrss.xml

The host of DR's gadget show, "So Ein Ding", Nicolai Sonne, says he has already informed Boxee of this.

Yes, the problem still persists.
But it's the streaming server/Boxee combination that's at fault, not the actual MP4 file. If you download the podcasts to a local NAS and stream them from there, it works fine.

I noticed that streaming starts buffering around 8-9 min into the shows equivalent to approximately 100 mb of mp4 file. Hopes this helps sort out the issue.

I've tried playing the mp4 stream from "So Ein Ding" on various devices - iPhone, iPad and on the chrome browser, They all start buffering and stutter at some point.
The clips for the site (http://www.dr.dk/NU/player/#/so-ein-ding/seneste) are playing correctly in the browser, however these are flash and not http.

Can you please point me to a working sample? (please specify the clip http address and the device name).

I can't say why you see stutter on other devices, Eli.
I've watched those podcasts before on Boxee for Window without a hitch.
And since you mentioned Chrome, I tried watching this clip, http://vpodcast.dr.dk/DR2/Soeinding/2011/Soeinding_110322202952.mp4 , in Chrome on Windows XP. It played fine from start to finish. Not a single stutter.

This is an issue with the boxee box. I never had problems in any browser either on OSX or Win7 currently running on my mac. By the way: I thought you resolved the issue: Comments on blog.boxee.tv:

I can confirm that the latest issue of "So Ein Ding" with the date 26/04 2011 is working 100% and no lag after the 9 minutes. The older ones are still "lagging" - So either Boxee og the people behind "So Ein Ding" fixed it.

I don't 100% agree. As i write - Its only working on the last episode of "So Ein Ding" and for now we need to know if DR changed their encoding of the show or people from boxee made a fix. For me it looks like DR changed something and for it to work on all other episodes, they would have to re-encode them - Do you get my point ?..

and to reply on "Older files (+500) are still hanging on the BB." I am only talking about the program "So Ein Ding" and no other broadcast from DR ...

Don't get me wrong. It's good news that new episodes are compatible with boxee box, it's great news.
I can only imagine Danmarks Radio (DR) have begun encoding or using a different server setup since this improvement have taken effect. I can't see how the boxee box should have been updated without us being aware of a new install. And since boxee still handle MP4 the way it have always been doing (at least since vers. 1.0), it still haven't solved the issue. With the announced improvements in the browser experience, we might see boxee handle [all] MP4 on DR and other feed-sites (http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-7268 - might be the same issue). I will check the new stream out as soon as possible.

Yeah... I only came across this issue on DR's broadcasts - So for me streaming from other sites hasn't been a big issue.

But atleast something happend and makes me even more happy with my BoxeeBox..

BTW : Haven't you signed up for beta-testing of new improved releases of the software. There is a beta-test out currently with alot of improvements.

Please contact the Jira-support/boxeeteam for info on that.

Are you guys on the EA or are you still using the last "official" version?
As far as I can tell, this looks like DR changed something in the way the show was encoded. We're not using the flash version so any changes we're making to the browser won't affect this.

Can anyone contact DR and confirm this?

I have contacted DR. I will follow up on their answer here. According to their site info it might take up to five days.

As for using the Beta-versions. I'm still set on the last official release. I like to contribute to the improvements and bug-solving questions on the box. But I still wan't to rely on a dependable experience. Seriously, when I turn on the box, I don't wan't to be disturbed by a new set of errors, new installs, new problems. I want to relax and watch content - unfortunately this excludes content from DR... which brings me here.

I will do what I can to bring you and the BB team closer to solve the issue. You are properly working on different issues simultaneously. But this issue is really, really annoying, please do your magic here and do it soon.

Hi. Just wanted to come with my input.

I have been trying different shows from DR.dk, and most of them still have the "buffering" issue, but not until like 8-10 min into the show.

Once the problem is encountered, it persists. I.e. after stopping, and ffw to the same location I get max 20-30secs of "normal playback" after which the podcast seems to be missing sync again.

PS: I'm running the latest version of Boxee on a Boxee Box (1.0.4.x)

In 1.1.0.19036 the one i tried has smooth sound, but the picture starts acting strange after having played a while (10 mins?). Then playback plays 4-5 frames, then skips 6-7 frames, then plays 4-5 and keeps going that way

Just a note, I see the same behaviour as PJ reported, but it is regardless of whether you play the podcast all the way (9-10 mins), or simply skip forward to the "hard part".

Ironically the "So ein ding" podcast that reviews the Boxee Box acts up just before the journalist starts dissing the boxee box for not being able to play hes podcasts! :D (11:40)

The reason why the latest "So Ein Ding" cast was playing flawlessly on the box, was that DR had exchanged their encoding to match their live stream format on http://www.dr.dk/nu . The change had a positive effect for Boxee owners, but resulted in compatibility issues with apple devises and some android phones. DR have now resumed their old encoding technique. Which in this case makes the boxee issue as problematic as it always have been.

BTW. Eli. DR gave me no specific information on their encoding technique, nor any details on what standard they are using. If you have specific questions about the format, I can contact DR again. Just email me: kristoffer [dot] negendahl [at] gmail [dot] com.

Det viser sig at vi havde problemer med vores podcast encoder da vi lavede det sidste program, så vi "lånte" mp4-filen fra DR NU i stedet. Der er en forskel i encodningen, men jeg har desværre ikke kunnet gennemskue præcis hvad det er.

Vi vil dog i fremtiden bruge det setup som vi tidligere har brugt, da der åbenbart er problemer med DR NU encodingen i forhold til mobile enheder (iPhone, iPad, Android mv.). Dette er naturligvis beklageligt når der åbenbart er problemer med Boxee, men vi prioriterer kompabiliteten med de mobile enheder højere da det er her flest brugere vil få glæde af det.

Jeg håber dette er svar nok, ellers er du naturligvis velkommen til at skrive tilbage til mig og jeg skal se om jeg kan vride noget mere info ud af mine kolleger.

I can still stream the first 9 minutes of most (all that I have tried) podcasts from DR, but after 9 minutes the stream acts up.

So, it's either in the boxee player (most likely) or the streaming content (I doubt it - no reason for it to be quite exactly after 9-10 minutes of streaming).

Ofc. it also happens when i ffw to the "problematic" area. But it doesn't happen when using other players than the boxee box player to stream the podcast.

The problem unfortunately persists after the last update.. :( Apx. 8 minutes in the stream gets desynchronized, where the sound continues like nothing happened, but the picture lacks uncontrollably.
