Repeated (long) Buffering Mp4 Stream Playback

Description

I have an app to stream dutch tv streams, these are from an ipad source so files are in mp4. The mp4 files stream perfectly from my windows boxee version. When streamed from the boxee box the playback is regular interrupted by (long) buffering about 40/60 seconds each time. Multiple of other boxee users who are using the app reported the same problem. I'm connected with a T1 internet connection on ethernet cable so it not the connection. It looks like a specific mp4 playback/buffering problem. I hope a solution can be found.

You can replicate the problem by follwing these steps
- Add repo boxee.bartside.nl
- Open the App 'RTL Gemist'
- Open any of the streams available
- After about 1 minute the buffering begins (repeated every other 2/3 minutes)

Here is the debug log file. Interesting is that part where the player starts caching.

20:50:19.0298 T:2962135952 M:447959040 DEBUG: CDVDPlayer::SetCaching - started caching

It seems that moments before it the cpu goes to 100% load and continues in this state during the rest of the playback. Before it it is between 10-20%

I hope this gives more information.

I have been hearing calls from my app users that the new sp3 firmware changed mp4 playback, but now it seems like the mp4 stream fails after about 4 minutes (slow playback and no audio). I haven't been able to confirm it (I have not installed sp3 yet), but it seems like an regression bug.

Bart, on tweakers.net forum is an post that descript how to change to sp3. I have already test it but not for a long time. The first minutes seems like good.

Confirmed that the continuous buffering is resolved in boxee SP3 1.0.3.17064, but now it is experionsing a regesion bug. Audio drops and video playback gets choppy after about 4 minutes.

Gurby, if you take a look at the issue (and issue BOXEE-7986) history, you will see that a progress has been done on these issues during these months.
we would love to continue working on this issue if we have the application and streams available for testing.

Due to the content provider I had to remove the app (RTL Gemist) temporary, it is online again in my repo (boxee.bartsidee.nl) at the moment. It would be great if it could be tested for the bug.

It seems that the problem is in the server. The server reports that it supports file seek but actually its doesn't.
Currently "Accept-Ranges" is set to "bytes" which is not true.
The easiest way to fix it is to change "Accept-range" to "none".

Thanks guys. Unfortunately for me the mp4 files are not hosted by myself and do not have physical access to the server nor any configuration. Is there any workaround that I can use/present my users?

The streams work fine on a windows boxee 0.9 version.

To give a compeet overview, the streams are working fine on xbmc, boxee 0.9, chrome (webkit) browser, iphone, android and VLC. I find it odd that it won't play then on the boxee box and that the argument now is that it is a server error.

Although I do not have access to the source, it seems more likely that something is wrong with the player. I really hope this could be fixed and that you guys can give it another shot!
