Description
Network and internet connection drops from all other computers on the same network while Boxee Box is running. I have my Boxee Box connected to my network using a wired connection straight into my router with the IP address set manually to a static address. Every time the Boxee Box is running all other connections to the network and internet drop out consistently. It used to do this occasionally with the 1.0.1.16215 firmware but ever since the update this weekend to the 1.0.1.319 version of the firmware this connectivity drop out happens all the time. Basically, while Boxee is running, no other computers can access the internet or other computers on the same network.

It has become consistent in this latest firmware update. It was only happening sometimes before the update. So now the Boxee Box is useless unless everyone wants to sit in front of the TV and not be on the home network or internet. So for me this update has made the Boxee Box pretty worthless, I was "semi" happy with it before, minus the UI changes.

Just to be clear, I am not talking about complete loss of connection to the internet or other computers on the network but more like sporadic dropping of network connections.
For example, my BB is hooked up via ethernet cable to my router and is turned on. The BB is not watching a show or anything just sitting at the home page. Now I am sitting with my laptop on the same network via wireless connection and my connection to the internet will come and go, sometimes I will lose internet connection completely and it wont come back until I turn the BB off. Also, if I try to browse a shared folder on my PC, which is also on the same network via a wireless connection, I am only able to connect to the folder occasionally. It basically acts just like the internet connection does.
I know it was said that some people have experienced this with the original 1.0 firmware but has anyone else had this happen to them with the new update? It seems worse for me after the update. If this has happened to you, was there anything you did to work around this issue?
As I said, I have created an issue for this on jira as I searched and did not find any issues posted there concerning this.
This has been really frustrating as I want to be using the Boxee Box and the wife likes to be browsing the internet at the same time. This issues does not bode well for the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor).

I have been having the same issue since receiving my two Boxee Boxes on release date and the problem has continued with both of the firmware updates. This is an extremely serious issue, as it affects all users of my home network and has resulted in considerable disruption of our family's ability to get (and stay) online. Essentially, if either or both of my Boxee Boxes are left on for any extended period of time, the internet connection stalls for any other device on my network (e.g. laptops, XBOX 360, etc.). This seems to occur more often when the Boxee Box is powered on, but is not in active use. For example, I have left a Boxee Box on overnight after finishing watching some content during the evening. When I go to bed, everything seems fine. The next day, however, myself or a family member will try to get online, but there is no internet connection. The only fix is to power down the Boxee Box and reset both the gateway and the router.
My ISP is AT&T Uverse and I'm using the standard gateway provided by the ISP (I believe it is a 2Wire 3800). Routing is being performed by a Netgear WNDR 3700 router. Broadband is delivered to the Boxee Boxes over Wireless N, but I'm using two Netgear Access Points, model WNHDE 111, to receive the signal, which is then sent to the Boxee Boxes via ethernet from the access points.

I am having this issue as well. My boxee box is connected via ethernet via a Netgear N wireless gateway, which is connected to my Airport Extreme. The boxee box will consistently drops other computers on my network. The only way to resolve it is to reboot the boxee box and my Netgear N wireless access point.

Did some packet captures. this might be related to boxee doing a large number of ARP requests when it is online. In the order of 20 per second in my observations.

hi jason -
yes, we do a full subnet scan in an attempt to find smb shares. the arp load shouldn't be too much for any router - 20 packets/second is very light, especially since the router doesn't cache or respond to these.
danny, what's the specific model of your netgear N wireless gateway?
also, for all users who hit this, please ensure you have the latest available firmware for your router. i know this is a pain, but many times issues like this are router/gateway bugs that get fixed over time.
thanks

Aha! I've been wondering why my wife's laptop (running Windows XP SP3) keeps dropping the wireless connection. I haven't noticed any problems with my main Windows 7 x64 PC. Both the main PC and Boxee are wired direct to a Buffalo WHR-G54S running Tomato 1.27 firmware.
I just checked and it looks like Tomato has been updated to 1.28. In the meantime, I'll upgrade to see if the situation improves, although the drops are pretty intermittent as it is.

Having this issue also.
Boxee Box (Firmware V 1.x (SP2))
All other PCs and Xbox360 on the network lose internet access.
They also have problems pinging other devices on the network.
A cold reset of Router (Fortigate 100B OS 3.4) and AP (Trendnet TEW-638APB) returns normalcy.

I have the boxee-box for a few weeks, and since I have a strange phenomenas.
I have a main home PC (server) which stores all the movies/music/pictures in the house, and several PCs for the children.
When I leave the BB turned on for a few hours, all other PCs in the house can't comunicate anymore with the server (which is the PC the BB is programed to scan).
In fact my server (runs windows vista OS) vanish from the Network list in those PCs.
After I shut down thw BB and restart the server, the problem is solved.
What is wrong? Why does the BB blocks my server?
BOXEE BOX support - you must address this issue!!!
I see many users having network problems due to boxee operation.
Please don't iggnore this.
The BB is such an excellent machine.
It will be a shame it spoiles its name due to this issue.
Thanks

Why is Boxee Box so chatty over ARP? It seems like it is constantly trying to autodiscover SMB shares on the subnet. I've configured my shares already, why is it doing this?
This is super chatty and aside from making my job difficult (currently debugging something) it's pointless, preventing various hardware on my network from going into low power state, and setting off all sorts of alarms on certain networks because it looks like an ARP spoofer.

Hi, I'm experiencing an issue. Not sure if it is this issue or a related issue. I'm running a Boxee Box with the latest firmware and a D-Link DGL-4500 router (tried latest firmware and an older firmware). After 5-15 minutes of streaming from Netflix or VUDU, Boxee will display error message saying that the internet connection has been lost and the router will become unresponsive (Internet doesn't work, router's administration interface is unreachable). Router must be rebooted to restore connectivity. This reproduces every time I watch a Netflix video. I have tried using both the wired and wireless connection.

Been really noticing this since I jumped the gun and bought a second Boxee (dlink) Never had this issue with my old xbox's running XBMC. I have to keep one unplugged to access anything and have all but given up explaining to the wife why these should be easy to figure out and start a movie from the kids when I am not around. I have tried everything to resolve it and hope someone can fix this soon.

Same problem for me. The Boxee kills the lan. Doesn't happen consistently but does happen often enough to be annoying. Boxee is wired into an Asus WL500Gp with OpenWRT Backfire 10.03.1-rc4. Had no problems until the Boxee was added to the network.

I can replicate this issue as well, and in my case it appears to have gotten worse with the latest firmware (with the Airplay feature).
In my case, I'm running DD-WRT on a Buffalo router (WZR-HP-G300N), and the Boxee is connected over a Netgear powerline ethernet. This setup has been stable and worked well for a long while, until very recently - right around the time I updated the Boxee.
At times, I can measure up to 1Mbps of steady traffic on the LAN ports that disappears when I pull the network cable from the Boxee. (Measuring with the Boxee in standby mode, with all other network devices off the LAN other than the computer running the DD-WRT UI.) Concurrent with this behavior is a severe packet loss/delay through the LAN ports on the router, which also goes away when the Boxee is unplugged.

I'm also having this issue. I have an Asus RT-N15 router. I've tried two different versions of Asus firmware and two different versions of DD-WRT firmware, still same issue.
I have two linux machines running Samba that the boxee is indexing and displaying content from.
Anyone found a workaround at least until we have a fix? Blocking multicast for the boxee maybe?

I'm experiencing the same issue with my Buffalo router WZR-HP-G300N running Open-WRT and it is causing other computers in my network from being able to see my Buffalo NAS Linkstation Duo LS-WXL.
I'm running Beta Firmware 1.2.1.20392 and it is still causing the problem. Any ideas? Any response from Development?
Another note, I came home today from work and all the ports on the switch that my boxee box is plugged into were flashing like crazy. I had to unplug the boxee box and reboot my NAS and AP to get my network working again. It has all the signs of a classic broadcast storm. Also, I tried just rebooting my NAS and AP with the boxee still plugged in and it didn't resolve the issue. I had to physically unplug (since powering it off didn't help) the boxee box to correct the issue.

The pain in the butt about this though, is that Boxee doesn't remember credentials. You can give it a default set to try, but then you have to have the same username+password combination on every machine in your network, so that throws security out the window.
Also it helps to get rid of any unused shares ($print, etc etc).

I've just started seeing the exact same on my Boxee, as of 2 days ago. My boxee has been running fine for over 10 months. Now it seems to disconnect the internet from all devices, somehow causing my router to reset which then turns off the internet for all devices in the house (which are also all hard wired). I tried returning/exchanging the router, thinking it was a router thing, but the same thing is happening.
My boxee is hard wire connected to my D-Link 655, which is hard wired to my DNS 323 NAS Drive. If I turn the boxee off, my internet works fine and doesn't disconnect my Computer from the Internet or anything else that is connected.
Only when the boxee is on, and even watching locally stored content will re-create this issue every time. Is there any way to fix this?

I am having the same issue, whenever Boxee Box is on all my other devices drop off intermittently. This is a big bug. I have only had the Boxee Box for a week and this is very disappointing. I'm thinking of sending it back at this point. I have an Ubee Router (TimeWarner) My Boxee Box is hard wired. Based on this and other posts it sems like this issue is happening with many different routers.

**Update**
I just wanted to update my earlier post and say I was finally able to get this resolved, I had to turn off UPNP on my router (DIR 655) and once I did this, my boxee with the latest firmware was no longer causing my internet to reset. It was an incredibly frustrating 2 weeks with lots of wasted time, but I'm glad its resolved now
