if it was a network source what type of host was serving the movie? mac, windows, etc. if it was upnp what media server?
this sounds like connection timeouts and may be a server side configuration, and maybe filesmb doesn't retry properly, but i need more info. will try to pause for 10m on a clip i have here and see if i can repro - 4m did not work (box client, wireless, ubuntu/samba server, wired)

Per some forum posts... this seems to be linked to harddrive spin down on the media host. Also simular to when you select a local media file from a host who's harddrives are spun down. The first time you try to execute the media, it fails. Waiting 10ish seconds and trying again is sucsessful.
Both issues are because Boxee is timing out while waiting for network data.

I get this problem consistently with 1.0.1.16125 and 1.0.1.16319. It never occurs on the factory default 0.9 firmware. When resuming from pause, video freezes, some buffered remnant of audio plays, the box becomes unresponsive to all controls and I have to hard reset the Box.
This happens when pausing local network content (.avi files in this case) served from a Samba share. The file server is Debian lenny and the drives are RAID, they never spin down.
Disabling netbios on the server and telling it to use only port 445 and not port 139 seems to improve things; so far I have not been able to reproduce the problem since making this change, but I'll need to test quite a bit more before I have any confidence in that approach.

This happens to me when watching ripped ISOs (not when I play a ripped VOB movie by using "play" from the files browser). When you pause it for even a second and try to re-start (not enough time for spin-down) the video is frozen and audio plays fine. You have to hit << or >> to get them sync'ed again.
Additionally my audio is out of sync by a smidge when watching files this way.

I have a similar issue.
If I pause using the pause button, then press the select button to bring up the playback controls and use it again to press play the audio continues but the video freezes up.
The Boxee Box is then unresponsive to all remote control commands and requires a power cycle to fix it.
Note: I am actually using a Harmony remote (as an MCE remote) for this, so my pause button is a pause button, not play/pause like on the Boxee remote.
Edit: Reproduced this with the Boxee remote. You don't need to pause for long at all.
Play a video, press play/pause, press select, press select (on the play icon), the audio will resume and the video will freeze.
I have created a new bug as my issue seems to be different from this one. http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-7478

This issue pops up sporadically for me in spurts. It also seems to be connected to any extended length of disuse, and then returning to the box. It will freeze up sometimes and just give me a black screen, just give me audio and no video, just give me video but no audio. Once the overlay became frozen, but the video continues to play. Regardless the remote became unresponsive and the only fix was to get up and reboot the box.
As I said, it seems tied to leaving the box unused for periods of time as short as a few minutes. It will even "un-dim" from the dim screensaver in the boxee OS when not playing anything and then freeze with the remote becoming unresponsive.
Some info on my setup:
Wired ethernet connected to a Linksys router running DD-WRT
Accessing SMB shares on a Mac computer running OS 10.6
also 2 wired portable Hard drives connected to the box via USB
HDMI video plugged directly into the Philips 1080p TV
Audio connected via optical to a Onkyo 7.1 receiver.
Let me know if you need anything else.

I had the same issue: video frozen on return from pause, audio plays but box is unresponsive to remote and had to be power cycled. I was playing an avi file from a samba share on a Synology NAS. Drives never spin down and I've never experienced this issue on a Popcorn Hour A100. Both Boxee Box and Popcorn are connected via ethernet. Paused video for less than 10 minutes, probably closer to 5.

I get this issue when running videos from an external hard drive connected directly to the box. Seems to be when the pause lasted some time, not sure how long, but when I unpause right away I never have issues. It either freezes the video which requires me to turn off the box or it will return to an intermittent static sound which can be resolved by leaving the movie and then running it again.

This issue is probably one of of the things that makes me hate the Boxee Box.. 300 bucks for this crap. I find that pausing a avi (xvid/mp3) video pretty much has a 1 in 3 chance of freezing up the Boxee Box on resume. Audio continues but video freezes and you have to manually turn the box off and on again to get it back.

Similar to Russell Hill and Pablo Alonso, when I resume playback after pausing the video for 5-10 minutes using the Play/Pause button, the video freezes but the audio continues. Must reset the box as all buttons in the remote don't work anymore. the file is 350MB Avi file. it is being played for a connected external HDD

In the interest of getting this issue fixed, I captured some debug logs off my Boxee Box tonight.
My apologies there's four logs here, but this issue is hard to replicate on demand. These four log files all occurred around the time my freeze/hang happened.
Rough Sequencing of Events:
Paused for 10 minutes - resumed ok
Paused for around 20 minutes - resumed ok
Jumped around the file a bunch
Paused again
Looked at the TV and realized the screensaver had hung
The Boxee Box iPhone Remote app had severed it's connection to boxeebox at this time, and could not reconnect
Boxee Remote was non functional
Powered off box
Powered box back on
Disabled debugging
The crash happened I believe +/- 5 minutes from 10:03 PM EST on 1/6/2011

Yes, it's still happening to me. Every time I leave it paused to go to the bathroom or get a drink, it will lose the stream after the buffered content gets used up. If it is just a momentary pause, let's say my wife asks me a quick question, it will resume and continue to play normally.

i am experiencing this problem as well. i had it on the 1.0 firmware and it persists on the brand new 1.1 firmware that i upgraded to last night. whenever the video i am watching is paused there is a 75% chance that it will resume playing the buffered amount and then kick me back to the menu. i can then resume and it continues on without a hitch unless i pause it again.
the length of the pause seems unimportant and occasionally the audio will resume with no video, similar to what others have mentioned. i can reproduce this time and again.
streaming media over wifi from my samba win7 PC, multiple formats confirmed to have the issue (720p .mkv file and a divx .avi file).
very frustrating issue, hoping for a quick fix. let me know if debug logs would be helpful.

I am also experiencing this issue, although since it did not occur for on version 1.0.3 or 1.0.4 unlike the other people with this issue. This issue started with 1.1.1 for me.. before, resuming playback worked flawlessly. So I opened another Issue on jira, with detailed description and log files, which i can also upload here.. Below is my description:
Short Description:
I stream most of my video off a hard drive attached to an Apple Airport Extreme. This is attached wireless to my Apple Time Capsule, Boxee connects wirelessly It works like a basic NAS, although a bit slow. What happens is when I'm playing a DVR rip of my NAS, i pause it for while. Boxee goes in to screensaver and the hard drive of my Airport goes to sleep. After say, 5-10 mins or longer I attempt to resume the video and it kicks me out back to menu. When I then resume the video, video itself freezes but audio continues. All other video, be it video files like divx, MKV or of the internet does not play anymore, I get black screen and short burst of audio.. then it does nothing. Only way to fix it is restart boxee box, go back to DVD rip and restart video from the beginning and it will work.
With previous firmwares, 1.0.4 and earlier, boxee would just resume the video without any hiccups. All other video would also play fine after the issue.
I believe though this issue is not very widespread, as only people with slow network attached storage will run into this, if you have hdd attached directly to boxee, or decent speedy NAS you most likely never run into this issue.
How to reproduce:
My Time Capsule died over the weekend, so reproducing the issue was not easy. It doesn't occur when playing files back when the HDD is attached directly to the Box or to Airport extreme which now forms the main hub of the network. So it most likely is related to response time that it takes for Airport and HHD to stream video over to the box.
In steps:
1. Play dvd rip over the network, either via NAS or other computer with the HDD attached to it.
2. Pause it, let it sit for at least 5 mins or more so that HDD goes to sleep and Boxee does shows screensaver
3. Disconnect HDD from network or pc to simulate slows response time of the NAS
4. Play file on Boxee, boxee will quit playing and throw you back in the menu
5. Resume dvd rip from your left of.. (I had to restart boxee for to recognize my network share again)
6. Boxee will freeze frame, audio will still play...
7. Playing any other video will result in black screen and short bit of audio, be it from local or internet sources
Included are 2 logs, one from recreating the situation just when boxee throws you out to menu. Second log is after the restart mention above when the actually issue occurs with no video playing after resuming it.
IMHO this issue is caused by slow response in resuming from NAS Source, boxee expecting something to happen within a certain time scale but it doesn't... This causes a crash in the video driver... resulting the freeze frame or no video at all.

I get this issue every time I use the resume function. Then when I try to start from beginning after failing at the resume I just get a black screen with audio. I have to reboot the boxee box to get it to work again, and only by clicking on Start from Beginning. Also, when I pause it only for a short bit my audio sync is slightly off. I am streaming all of my media from my NAS device from an .iso format. I'm running the latest version of boxee box.
