crash/reboot when playing mp4's generated by handbrake when played from a synology nas box

gary sekinger added a comment - 28/Feb/12 9:09 PM I also meant to add the the mp4 in question plays fine in both VLC running on my Mac and a copy of Boxee running on the same Mac. It's not the only one that causes the dlink Boxee to crash.

gary sekinger added a comment - 03/Mar/12 10:33 AM I set my Boxee debug level to "debug" and played the mp4 several times. I uploaded the following files to the ftp site: boxee.1330787601.4145.tar.bz2 boxee.1330786757.2001.tar.bz2 boxee.1330786541.1979.tar.bz2 report.sekinger.1330787459.3493.tar.bz2 report.sekinger.1330787318.2992.tar.bz2 report.sekinger.1330786938.2490.tar.bz2 boxee.1330738399.1982.tar.bz2 When playing from the beginning of the movie, it plays for exactly 4:11 and then the Boxee crashes. The last crash is a "resume at 4:11" play and it didn't make it much further.

gary sekinger added a comment - 10/Mar/12 11:49 AM I've upgraded to the latest build - 1.5.1.23735-b6a5be1 and the problem persists. I updated several more crash reports/stack traces & a file that causes a crash all the time (avatar.m4v). The longest I can play from the beginning is to the 4:11 mark. And the same file plays fine in VLC and through Boxee when installed on my mac (it's an older build on the mac)

gary sekinger added a comment - 11/Mar/12 3:58 PM - edited I used the "normal" profile and included the english closed captions - not burned in. I choose nothing else special in Handbrake. I have about 40 video that have been created with Handbrake using the same settings. Some play w/o issue and some crash. The file I posted crashes at the same point consistently.

John Luckett added a comment - 29/Mar/12 2:34 PM I think BOXEE-12435 and this issue are directly related. I, too, used Handbrake and always include Closed Captions whenever available. I also choose the Normal profile when encoding. I really wish you guys could get this fixed. It's made your product useless since it occurs so frequently. I very rarely use it for anything *but* local content.

John Luckett added a comment - 17/Apr/12 10:08 PM - edited I finally gave up on waiting. The complete inattention to this defect sealed the deal for me. I love the idea of the Boxee Box but I went out this past weekend and bought an Apple TV to replace my Boxee Box. It's nowhere near as capable but I'm glad I spent the money on it instead of the Boxee TV add-on that I was originally planning to get. So far, no complaints. All of my movies play fine on the Apple TV and there's no buffering issues (another problem I was having with the Boxee Box.) To everyone still experiencing this issue... well... good luck.

gary sekinger added a comment - 17/May/12 10:58 AM Agreed. It's a subtitles issue. And I can't believe that something that crashes the box would take this long to address. I've gone from being a huge advocate to a disgruntled customer. What really pisses me off is that I tested the software before buying the Boxee. If you load Boxee software on your Mac, these files will play w/o issue. I tested before I bought and still got burnt. I'm putting mine on ebay and getting something else that works.

This issue has been known since at least January and there's been nothing on any fix or even an ETA on a fix. See BOXEE-12435 - it was filed before I filed this bug. It's a shame, Boxee is really great but support has been terrible.

Henrik Kirk added a comment - 28/Jun/12 3:43 PM Actually its been since BOXEE-11660 which I reported.. So yes im not using my boxee to watch movies any longer. Supports is not anywhere near what I would expect in 2012
