Description
While playing back video content (all files encoded as MP4 but with mkv extensions) that is hosted on a local, networked device via SMB, playback will often stop and the Boxee Box will return to the Home screen (most often), restart (less often) or completely lock up (rarely).
This problem has been happening since I bought the device in October of 2011 (with firmware versions before 1.5, of course) and it's completely random. Sometimes, it happens at the same spot in a movie and fast-forwarding through that spot will allow me to continue watching until the end. Most times, it's random and will not reoccur at the same spot.
I've just upgraded to the publicly released version of 1.5 (i.e., non-beta) firmware and the problem continues.
As an interesting side note, I've yet to encounter the problem after enabling debug logging. With logging disabled, the issue happens several times during playback of almost any movie. I've attached the error logs from my testing of the 1.5 firmware.

I also meant to add that both the Boxee Box and the SMB server are connected to the same network router via ethernet. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

You are reporting that the video halts, and by looking at your logs I think that you are experiencing a crash.
When the video halts, do you see Boxee logo, and only afterwards, the Home screen?
if yes, than this is a crash.

the logs you attached are very small. please change the log to DEBUG level, start the box, wait a minute, and attach the log to this issue.
I wish to see if your log contains errors.

When the video halts, I don't notice the Boxee logo unless it's happening very quickly. It's certainly not like a cold boot where I see the animation and Boxee logo. I also notice the audio cut out 2-4 seconds before video stops playing. That's our first clue that it's about to fail.
I'd enabled debug logs a couple of days ago but like I said the crash never happens with that level of logging enabled. I have yet to figure that one out. As soon as I get home tonight, I'll perform a cold boot, wait a minute, and then attach the logs.

From a cold boot, it crashed shortly after starting a movie. Fortunately, debug logging was still enabled and I'll attach both logs. Also, I did see the Boxee logo and it restarted fairly quickly to the home screen.

please upload the file which was played during the crash.
Kung Fu Panda 2.m4v
It would help us reproduce and fix the issue if you could please upload the file or a file sample to the "incoming" directory at
ftp://ftp.boxee.tv
user: dropbox
pass: swA4EQAt
Before uploading, Rename the file to include the issue number in its file name.
This is a write only FTP, and other people will not see your files.

This problem is driving my family and I nuts and happens with almost all of the movies we watch. I see you have a new beta out. Any ETA on this one? Since it's reproducible, I'm hoping a fix will come soon.

I am having the same issue. Boxee Box and Windows 7 media server both running on same wired gigabit switch. Playback will just stop in the middle of playing a shared video. The boxee remote can bring up the leave video display, and then when a selection is made, it then becomes unresponsive. I then need to push the button on the boxee box directly to shut it down, and then again to power it back up. The point at which it locks up on the same video changes each time.

I've been experiencing the exact same crash described by Mark Ponikvar. Same setup, same crash, only it does not happen consistently on the same files. After a crash and a hard restart I can always watch the entire file without issues. It seems it is only when the Boxee Box has been running for a while that these crashes occur. Before I was running the first beta after the official 1.5.0 release and now I have updated to the latest beta 1.5.1.23731 but no luck, crash just happened while watching an episode of a tv show (720p mkv file).
I've got some logs but I'm not sure they correspond to the moment the box crashed. Anyway the error messages in dmesg are similar to some already attached to this ticket:

I also get this problem when playing back mkv videos that I made from HD DVDs. It seems that it may also be connected with the HD Audio stuttering issue since I get that problem as well on these same files. When the problem happens (usually at the very beginning of the video) the boxee will freeze and reset itself I see the boxee static logo and then the home screen. A few times it froze the boxee box completely and I had to reset it manually.

This is driving me crazy ! I'm experiencing a crash.
When the video halts, I see the Boxee logo and afterwards the Home screen.
Sometime by just scrolling through my video list it crash, it crashes also when I click play, I reset the boxe and reinstall the last version of Boxee but still same issue.
I 'm using my old WD TV to play my NAS content

Sign me up to this one to, but for me it´s all videoformats, not just MKV files.
Using the latest version: 1.5.1.23735, and first I only thought it was just ONE movie, now it´s all movies that hangs between 3 seconds or up to 10-15 minutes. The fastest was 3 seconds.

Add me to the list of users experiencing this issue. Has happened with some files over AFP, SMB, UPnP, and USB direct. Has happened with mp4s mostly, but that's mostly what I have. Some movies work great without problems, others crash with near 100% precision at specific times.
None of the problem files have issues outside of Boxee itself, so it's very difficult to determine a course of action. They don't appear to be bad files at all, it just seems that Boxee is losing its mind on them.
Clearly the company is still "doing things" but does not give ETAs on possible fixes (a policy I at least understand, if not necessarily like). That said, I've seen blogs of road trips and the launch of another new service, yet this bug is pretty much invalidating my Boxee Box purchase unless we can have a fix or a workaround. It's hard to get excited about the future of Boxee (or side development like Cloudee or iPad apps) when game breaking bugs like this seem a secondary (if even) concern to the dev team while remaining a prime concern to the users. It's nice Boxee is paving new roads, but doing so while stranding your existing customers seems an odd strategy.
It would be nice if Boxee would at least acknowledge that this issue is being addressed, offer up some clues as to cause so that we can adapt to the problem, or simply to tell their paid customers they are out of luck so we can look into alternatives and stop holding our breath. Being in limbo for most of the year, if not longer, while corporate communication declines, is simply not getting us anywhere... unless Boxee's goal is to alienate their existing userbase.
I'd gladly provide my own samples and logs if it would help, but I'm not really getting a "we care" vibe from the JIRA pages related to this problem at the moment.

I am almost 100% Certain that this is related to a bug in the way boxee handles embedded (soft) subtitle streams.
I have had multiple reports that these crashes happen only when the playback files have subtitles; and in some files it's completely reproducible at the same spots in the video. It's not specific to the type of container or the type of subtitle: it happens at least with mp4/mkv containers, and/or srt/ttxt subtitles...and probably more combinations that I haven't tried.
When I have a file with reproducible crashes:
- If I take the same file and remux it into any container (even remuxing back to the same container, which essentially duplicates it): the same crashes happen.
- If I take the same file and remux it into any container but WITHOUT any subtitle streams: the crashes go away and playback is fine.
So it seems that files with only Video and Audio streams are OK; but once a subtitle stream gets added the boxee is extremely prone to crashing (eg a quick boxee logo and then a return to the home screen). These files are known to play back fine on at least half a dozen other devices so it's definitely a boxee bug.
