Description
When playing back local content and selecting the browse for subtitles option (press button in centre of d-pad during playback and select the CC option, then select the browse item) nothing seems to happen.
In previous firmwares a selection option would appear for either local or online subtitle browsing, but in this version nothing seems to happen.
This makes the browse for subtitle option unusable

Actually local subs still can be used as the same dialog will show you the subs you have in the same directory as the video, without the need to browse.
therefore what's actually affected is the online subs - we're looking into that.

Eli, it's nice that subtitles in the same directory can still be used, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the browse function is broken. Since I have cases where the subtitles are in separate directories from the video file and I do sometimes use the online subtitle feature, I really want a working browse function.

Ok, so apparently this bug is the catch-all bug for all broken subtitle functionality as my bug relating to missing Opensubtitles functionality just got marked as a duplicate of this one. (BOXEE-12425)
So please fix the missing Opensubtitles functionality when looking at this bug, not just the local browsing feature. From the Opensubtitles bug I added:
"Previously when navigating to the CC menu option during video playback one could browse for subtitles using Opensubtitles. This option has been removed/forgotten in the lastest firmware release. Please add this option back as it is a very critical piece of functionality for many Boxee users."

Cameron, my issue deals with both the local and online subtitle funtionality. That is probably why yours is closed as a duplicate, since yours only deals with the online subtitles.
Hopefully they'll fix this in time for the next beta.

Same problem, this renders the Boxee Box useless for me. I hope this terrible bug gets fixed soon. I will be returning the device to store if it's not fixed because it's so uncomfortable to load subtitles now i just plugged my laptop to the computer while the boxee gathers dust.

Same here, Opensubtitles option totally disappeared, browse doesn't work.
I don't really care for for browse, as I didn't even use it at all, but Opensubtitles is a key feature, that I use quite often.
Hope it's a bug that will be fixed soon, cause there is nothing about dropping Opensubtitles search in release notes.

Same thing happened on my Boxee Box also. Cannot access to Opensubtitles. Please try to resolve this issue ASAP, as tones of TV series on my local storage is useless as I have to download subtitles manually and copy them to the exact same folder as the episode.
Also, there was a great suggestion from Peter. Please, if there is any possibility, try to add 'podnapisi.net' as alternative source for subtitles, as it is much beter then Opensubtitles.

Surprised, angry and disappointed. I'd been waiting for a new Boxee Box update because I thought the Boxee folks would upgrade to include music search option.
But instead, they took away the feature that I depend on: SUBTITLES.
I am hearing impaired, and I need subtitles. I don't want them - I NEED them.
I know I can find subtitles online, download them, put them in the same folder, change the name to match the movie file name, and then play the movie.
But I really, really liked the Open Subtitles option. It was awesome. It even helped my mother-in-law from Brazil for Brazilian subtitles.
Please, let's fix this ASAP

Unbelievable that this was released with no subs, it's a glaring step backwards when most of v1.5 is better. This was in constant use in my hearing-impaired household (even though admittedly it always found the wrong subs). Please return this feature ASAP, and even better improve the searching!

Since this is a show-stopping (sic) feature for 1.5, I agree with the suggestion to up the priority of this issue to P1.
Also, an estimated time of fix would be welcome.

While you're fixing this, why not add couple more sources in addition to opensusbtitles? :] Or a managable source list maybe?

I second Cartman's suggestion... using the subtitles language preference already in the settings (I think it's used for DVD images) as a filter for the search would be nice. It could even be automatic in the cases when there is only one available sub in that language.

My apologies but honestly I don´t care is this a simple unintentionally “bug”. Instead, I suspect (very strongly) that this is done with a particular goal. As a developer , I'm sure that this kind of mistake is impossible, even less if this “bug” didn´t exist in the previous beta version . The problem is to know why did you did it ?..... will be related to Megaupload affair? perhaps...

Great news! But it's not really fixed for us, till we get the update.
On a side note, it's kinda annoying that developers treat users like beta-testers.
Boxee Box isn't all that cheap piece of hardware and when it doesn't work like it supposed to, I think, that users expect a sort of apology and estimate date for the fix, not just "there, I fixed it".

I partially agree with Cartman's side note, but as a project mgr/developer myself I know that it's not usually possible to give an ETA. I hate that this was an issue in the first place and it certainly does feel like consumers are being treated as testers, since this should have been easily caught in either the real beta testing or (far better) by internal/automated regression tests; but at least the bug was fixed within a few days of the first user report.
...and now yes, I fully agree that an ETA *for the actual production release* would be very helpful...

The quoted text below is a fragment from the discussion topic: http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=52641&page=3 and I think It is worth to paste here:
"Every update firmware comes with a new bug. An issue that don't exist in the past. They need to check these bugs before launching a mandatory update. And the worst is that bug alredy exists in the non-mandatory update. So, if they promote it, its logical to fix it before.
That's inconceivable.
I have rights to complain about something that I just can't think It is correct, even if it is a techno 'futile' thing.
The problem with a lot of people is that they just give up so easily or just don't even try to impose their voice.
Things don't change with this behavior and the Dev's actions just reflect that.
People don't start being rude randomly. Every action has a story and a reason behind them.
Although i'm pointing only my point of view, I do know they probaly have another. Maybe they are tired, or don't like their jobs, or whatever reason that justify their actions. But you know what? Without a minimum conversation, the impression is that they just don't give any importance to that project. The user talk approximation is a important factor in my opinion.
And maybe, just maybe, after reading this, they do change something."

I think the thing that bothers me the most about the Boxee project is that the whole project is stuck in a kind of "almost-open" limbo. Boxee says, and rightly so, that when we buy the Boxee Box we are buying the hardware--the Boxee software is still a free and open source project, meaning, there are no guarantees about how it will work. However, then a decision is made to lock down the Boxee Box and keep the Box "closed". So Boxee Box owners are stuck with a "closed" piece of hardware that they have no control over running "open" software--this is an inherent conflict.
My feeling is that Boxee must decide if it is going to be a truly commercial operation and see both the Box and the Boxee software as a complete commercial package, providing a commercial level of support, with a proper commercial dev and QA teams or the operation must be made completely open by unlocking the Boxee Box and allowing owners and customers to contribute to the project, fix bugs, make releases--the way "open" projects are designed to operate.
If the Boxee project continues to stay in this "almost-open" limbo, its users are going to continue to be frustrated by things like we see here. People do not understand that what they are paying for is the Box hardware and not the software--yet these same people are not in control of the very Box that they paid for. This is always going to be a problem.

I bought the Box mainly for opensubtitles and Spotify.
Spotify doesn't have the most basic function : search.
And now, Opensubtitle is gone.
My feeling is that it's not a "forgotten" issue, but more like a licensing one.
I'm disappointed with the box now. Hey Boxee team, listen to what brings money into your wallet : paying customers.

What really makes me mad is their policy of forcing firmware upgrades onto the box, messing it up and then not being able to communicate to their customers to at least say "I'm sorry. A fix is coming in n days".
I use Apple products and they are not much better in terms of introducing bugs - BUT at least I can decided when I want to upgrade to a new system version i.e. be an early adopter or not.

Do you guys need someone to test these files before they come out?
That is the problem and there's no-one who knows more about these things and how they "should work" than me. Come on guys. You fix 2 things and break 4. Its just a vicious circle. Get your shit together!!
