regression: Subtitles always on by default, regardless of setting

Description

I have subtitles turned off by default in the main settings, yet whenever I play a video file that also has a .sub subtitles file in the same directory, it always starts with the subititles on.
Going to the main settings and toggling "enable subtitles by default" on and off again stops them from showing for that file.

This is a regression back to the same issue that was in a much older version of the firmware, that was fixed months ago...

guys, please try to remove the .sub/.idx files from this directory, these are DVD subtitle formats and they are on by default,
when using only .srt (or other external subtitle formats) do you still experience this issue?

I don't recall having the issue with .srt files, but I don't have any that I can check at the moment.

I would hesitate to say that removing the .sub file is the fix though. The "enable subtitles by default" option should work for every subtitle type.

Having the same issue and I agree with the previous comment. The setting within Boxee settings should dictate whether subtitles are automatically shown or not. Then it is up to the viewer to enable them through the on screen display if they specifically want them on whilst watching a video. Forcing Boxee owners to go through their movie/show archive manually deleting sub-title files is just not right, especially as the subtitles may be required at a later date.

Please can this be fixed.

reproduced using 1.2.1.20350

repro:
uncheck "enable by default" under Settings>Media>Subtitles
play a video file with .idx/sub or .srt

result:
subtitles are enabled.

Seeing the same thing. Set Globally to have subtitles off, yet playing wtv and mkv files starts up with subs on.

After some testing there appears to be a workaround for this (thanks to Ronald in the forums), but it's not easy for most people and it may not be acceptable. This bug seems to go away if you factory reset and then upgrade to the latest 1.5 beta (1.5.0.23615) before adding media back into your library. The issue seems to have something to do with media added through older versions of the firmware.

Anyway, these steps worked for me:
1. Perform factory reset. I didn't even bother logging in after this. I went straight to step 2....
2. Install 1.5.0.23615 beta via USB
3. Add media sources and let it do it's thing until it has identified your media
4. Ensure the subtitle setting is configured to "off" in the settings area
5. Validate that files with embedded and external subtitles play correctly (without displaying subtitles)

Note: You'll have to manually identify any media that isn't picked up automatically and you'll have to tag each file as "watched" if that's important to you. And other settings/data may be lost through the factory reset. If you use NFO's then I suppose this is a lot easier.

Also, I did find that one of my MKV files with 4 embedded subtitle streams still does not obey the setting. However, as far as I can tell the rest of my files seem to work as expected with both external and internal subtitles.

However, yesterday I upgraded all 3 of my Boxees to the official 1.5 FW release and the issue is back again.

However, I disagree with Aaron above about his steps.

For the 1.5 upgrade, taking heed of other people's advice in the forum. I performed a factory restore back to 0.9, then let it upgrade itself to 1.5 official, then added my sources.

Subtitles are off as default in the settings ( I have not pressed the button at all) but yet subtitles are appearing.

Peter, I'm sorry that my instructions didn't work for you. Perhaps it's still more complicated than we're giving it credit for. My media collection no longer has this problem with the exception on one file. That one MKV file has 4 embedded subtitle streams and it doesn't appear to obey the default subtitle setting. However, all of the other files that have either embedded (single stream) subtitles or external SRT subtitles seem to be working properly. I'll play around with this some more today to ensure it's indeed working. FWIW, all of my files are MKV.

Also, this wasn't just my personal experience. Another forum member was also successful with this.
