are you using the "match screen refresh rate to video" option (Settings>General>Display)?

if it is enabled, try to disable it and see if you still have the same issue with the video playback,
please keep us updated.

Yes, I am using that setting. I turned it off and tried again but the problem persists.

Please note that even with "match screen refresh rate to video" turned ON, 25fps files play back with the TV/receiver set to 24Hz output.

Just installed 1.2.1.20451 and there is no change. Still massive judder and audio sync issues.

Display setting is at 1080p@24Hz. Either with "match refresh rate" turned on or off, it never changes when the video plays. Since the video is 25fps I'd expect it to switch to 1080p@50Hz.

This repros with ALL 25fps files, not just the sample uploaded -- would providing more examples help? This makes it extremely hard to watch any BBC shows.

My boxes will output the proper framerate to my DVDO DUO but it is still jerky. This has always been an issue from the very beginning. Any content I have from BDs from the UK exhibits extreme jerkiness. But the same content output at 1080P24/25/50/60 on my PCH products have no issues with it. The Boxee Box has always had problems with my content from the UK.

Sure. Uploading a 50MB sample from The Exorcist right now, titled "11158 (Exorcist).mkv". Once every second a frame is skipped (or so it appears). It's especially obvious when the camera pans slowly or when a character is walking at a certain speed.

Honestly, it looks REALLY bad. Repros on all 25fps (PAL) content, which means everything from the UK (all BBC material either broadcast or on DVD or BluRay). Please try watching a full 25fps movie on your Boxee Box for yourself, it's incredibly distracting.

The correct fix would be to match the TV refresh rate to 50Hz. A crappy fix that would still be an improvement would be to increase playback rate 4% and pitch shift the audio track back down to original.

Not sure how you are unable to repro. Does your refresh rate change to 50Hz when you play the sample? If not, no repro for you must mean you already have some logic somewhere to speed up the content 4% and pitch shift audio back down. If that's the case, it is definitely not working on my device.

I tried watching some Top Gear yesterday and the judder was unbearable. Content is all 25fps (PAL), I have output set to 1080p@24Hz with match display to frame rate enabled, and the TV/receiver never get set to 50Hz, they stay on 24Hz.

The TV's refresh rate did changed to 50Hz when i played both of your samples, still no playback issues, both videos play smooth.

please try connecting the boxeebox straight to your TV using HDMI, not using a receiver, and see if this issue persist,

Hmm in system settings I just noticed that 1080p @ 50Hz is no longer a listed option for me. I can confirm that this did exist and work for me on an older firmware (I used to use this as a workaround for match refresh rate not working). Is there some change that would prevent it from discovering 50Hz mode in my setup?

I'm running it into a Pioneer VSX-1019 then to a Samsung 650 series LCD.

Have not tried plugging directly to the TV yet, as all my HT cabling is cable-tied and tucked away -- it's a huge job to pull it all apart and change anything.

Please accept my apologies for the delay in following up.

I attached the Boxee Box directly to my Samsung LN52A650 TV and the issue still repros. No 50Hz display options show up in display settings either.

I can confirm that both my receiver and TV work properly with 50Hz mode with other sources. And on an older Boxee firmware, 1080p@50Hz was an option in display settings, although back then it still didn't get selected for automatically matching display refresh to media display rate so it's only "sorta kinda" a regression :)

Please let me know if I can help further. This is currently the biggest issue for me /w Boxee, and apparently I am not alone, judging from AnandTech's media streamer roundup (http://www.anandtech.com/show/5129/2011-media-streamer-roundup-netgear-ntv550-acryan-playonhd2-and-the-boxee-box/10):

"The Boxee Box and the PlayOn!HD2 have support for 23.976/24 Hz only. If you are in NTSC land, and you wish to watch a PAL video, you might be out of luck with respect to matched refresh rates even if your display supports both NTSC and PAL."

Settings > System > Debug > Debug Level = Debug
ReStart Boxee, and after experiencing the problem, close Boxee and attach your log file to the bug.
DEBUG log slows down the performance. so afterward, switch the log level back to NONE
Boxee Box log may be found at *http://boxeebox:8080/ under 'Boxee Logs', click on the "Get latest " link. (*boxeebox =ip address of the box)

Sorry for the delay, have been travelling and busy with work.

I've attached the debug log for you. The debug spew at the top of the screen did correctly list playback as being 25.0 FPS.

All video enhancements are turned off on this TV. Other devices (DVD/Bluray) correctly negotiate and play back 25FPS content at 50Hz on this same setup (HDMI input to Pioneer receiver to Samsung TV).

I'll try out the beta firmware when I have a chance.

OK, I think I'm having this problem too, or a very similar one. What I can tell you is that I notice the judder/choppiness whenever watching content from the UK (25/50fps). If there is a way for me to access/play samples provided by "No thanks" I will gladly test. My config is as follows:

Boxee Box > Harman Kardon AVR 354 receiver > Sony KDL-52XBR6 TV

Normally I just use 1080p for my resolution on the BB and I don't check "Match screen refresh rate to video" (mainly because everything seems to work well without it and the delay in switching to the native res annoys me and sometimes seems to affect audio sync it seems). Regardless, like "No thanks" I've tried every combination I can think of trying. Now, one thing that might be different is that when I do check "match screen refresh rate to video" the aforementioned delay in switching video modes kicks in and my HK AVR 354 clearly shows an input signal of 1080p/50. It then outputs at "1080p" which I assume to mean 1080p/60. But, things do not any different than when I just use 1080p on the BB resolution and leave "match screen refresh rate to video" unchecked.

The other thing I've tested is BB directly to my TV. Same results with one exception here. If I match the refresh rate (thus forcing the BB to 1080p/50) my TV can't handle the resolution. I'm assuming this is because my TV just can't handle a 50Hz signal? I'm also making the assumption that my HK AVR 354 can handle the 1080p/50 signal and is simply outputting to my TV 1080p/60 (which the TV can handle). My TV can handle 1080p/24, so I've tried that as the resolution on the BB too with no help.

BTW, I'm playing the media directly from a USB attached hard drive, so no network streaming involved here. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to attempt to help.

That was my suspicion -- the logs were tiny and didn't have anything that made sense to me. I followed the directions precisely multiple times (with debug console spew showing at the top of the screen) and had the same results.

Will try again on newest build and see if I can get it to produce logs.

Turns out there are two motion features on my Sony Bravia TV I had disabled one of them (Motion Enhancer) but the other (CineMotion) I had not. I only figured this out after I had pulled the debug logs and it showed that it was in fact outputting at 50hz or 25fps.
