Description
Since the update I get extreme buffering during playback of .mkv files on my NAS drive. I've tried with several content pieces and all experience the same issue. Seems the unit locks up after less than 4 minutes of playback!

Tobias comment:
After upgrading my Boxee Box to the 1.2.0 firmware I got A LOT of buffering when playing 1080p MKV movies.
I don't think it has anything to do with the particular media files because when starting any local movie, the pre-buffering is much longer with 1.2.0 than the previous 1.1.2.
I have reverted back to 1.1.2 and the problem went away. Now I have upgraded again to 1.2.0.20310 (to make this jira ticket) and the problem is here again.
The setup is NAS Synology 411j. Wired connection through a 1gbit switch. Using SMB.

This is still a problem in 1.2.1.20451
when I press 'I' on the remote I can see that the "video pq:%" is low and moves to 0% and then it re-buffers. Happens when the video is at 15-25 Mbits.
I have sent a log:
2011-10-20 13:59:58 57.48 kb boxee.1319111997.2331.tar.bz2

I've been having the same issue as well trying to stream full Bluray rips either as ISO or MKV. I begin to get buffering if the bit rate goes up above 42Mbps. I can stream the same files including the ISOs with full Bluray menus using my Dune HD Smart D1 connected on the same cable the Boxee Box was connected to and with no changes to my network setup with no buffering. Please look into this. Thanks.

buffering has been a huge problem with 1.2.1 to the point that 1080p mkv are unwatchable via SMB wired. buffering issues disappear when downgrading to pre 1.2 releases. I am beyond annoyed.

I notice playing mkv via SMB wired that the video pq:% is always very low. When playing the same files via USB the video pq:% is usually steady at 99%.

With 1.1.2 (and earlier I do not see this problem). Setup is Synology 411j NAS connected to D-Link GigaExpress DGS-1008D, an 8-port 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Switch
Boxee Box is also directly connected to this switch.
After upgrading to any 1.2.x version I get horrible SMB performance.
I have now tried with another switch (ZyXEL NBG-4604 router that has built-in 4 port gigabit switch). And here I get much better performance.
I guess the Boxee Box and firmware 1.2.x doesn't like my d-link switch (urgh!). I have not experienced any other problem with my switch.

So far I've only run into one BD ISO with this current firmware that I've seen buffering from my SMB shares and that is Gran Torino. It's not even a high bitrate title. So far all the high bitrate BD ISO titles I've tried have not had any buffering issues.
But also with the Gran Torino BD ISO, when I tried it from an NFS share, it didn't have any buffering.

I confirmed this issue is resolved for me when I play the high bitrate files from a usb hdd connected to the boxee directly. However, it buffers when SMB streaming from the hdd connected to a Win 7 machine. AQ and VQ are near 0 for these files.
The box is also connected to a dlink dgs-1005d, the 5 port version of the switch reported by Tobias above. I connected the box directly to my router, bypassing the switch and the problem still exists. So this is not a switch problem for me.

I am having the same problem with bluray folder structure films especially with the new Star Wars Episode, but also Batman The Dark Knight etc. .
SMB and /or NFS sharing are the same here - neither of them solve the buffering issues.

I don't get it. This ticket was created in August and it has not been assigned to anyone yet? Seems like a pretty big bug, where boxee can't play mkv's at all over a network. My network is wired, there is no reason for a movie to buffer every 5 minutes or less, depending on the movie. Is anyone on the Boxee team even looking into this? Heck, with the newest firmware I updated to, sometimes even my .avi's are dropping sound, and locking up video.

I am having the same issue since the last update as well. I thought maybe it was my switch to a nas appliance ( qnap ts-659 pro+) but after reading more and more I am finding that I am in the same boat as others and it most likely has nothing to do with my nas device.
Is there a recommended firmware version that I should roll back to?

This isn't just with SMB. It is also with NFS. From what I've read, even local.
I've got a 20 drive RAID60 File Server over dual gigabit.
I've got 2 Boxees fresh from Amazon and less than 2 weeks old.
1 Boxee is wired via Gigabit switch, 1 Boxee is wired via HomePlug AV or Wireless via 2.4GHz 802.11n.
I've tested every version 1.2 and later on a clean boxee install with NO sources attached.
I've tested with wired and wireless on each Boxee.
I've tested with multiple routers/switches.
I've tested via SMB and NFS.
Each Boxee after 1.2:
On BD ISOs or Bluray 1:1 MKVs, CPU is at 98-100% and vq% slowly drops until it buffers on sustained video over 21Mbps.
Boxee #1:
Wired to gig switch, 1.5 Beta clean install, NFS.
10,000 BC is a small Bluray at 15GB, probably averaging about 12Mbps. Is VC1 and has DD. It plays at 50-70% CPU most of the time, spiking 100% CPU during some high bitrate parts.
A Bug's Life is a Bluray of 20GB. h.264 and has DTS-MA. CPU sits between 85 and 100%, vq% sits between 50 and 70% most of the time.
American Gangster is 30GB, VC1 and DTS-MA. Doesn't buffer as often, but still spikes and buffers.
Star Wars Episode III: 36GB. h.264, DTS-MA. Title Intro is 33Mbps. Buffers multiple times, CPU is always 100%.
Avatar is a large Bluray at 40GB. Averaging probably 30+Mbps and spiking 40Mbps at some parts. Buffers almost constantly. Is h.264 and has DTS-MA. Never have had an audio problem or drop out.
No matter VC1 or H.264, or DTS/DTS-MA, anything sustained over 21Mbps video causes 100% CPU usage, while vq% slowly drops until it buffers again.
At 33Mbps, vq% drops quickly and I buffer every ~13 seconds.
At home screen with nothing happening, CPU sits ~50%.
After switching to 1.1 Firmware, I get no buffer and CPU is very low.
Something is very wrong... I bought these Boxees to stream TV shows and Bluray rips. Unfortunately, I can really only do one of those.
It's a good thing Amazon gives me 30 days to return things.

Exactly, I can stream all of those movies on my Dune using the same network setup with no issue and be able to fast forward, rewind, and chapter skip. The same titles on the Boxee Box begin to buffer once the bit rate gets up into the high 30Mbps and above. When I had USB drives attached to the Boxee Box, I was able to transfer files to them at a steady 8.6MBps which should be more than sufficient for streaming Blurays but that is not the case.

Just rolled back to 1.1.3.19252.
Avatar never makes CPU exceed 50%, even while scanning new media.
vq% always high and steady.
How could the Boxee development team go backwards? Their newest releases are slower, and worse at doing the job that this box is designed for.
The bottom line is, the latest updates are too bloated and push the little bit of hardware in the Boxee too far.
Normal users don't notice because they are busy playing downloaded/compressed 720p and 1080p rips.
Those of us who want the full Blurays get screwed.

My happiness don't last longer. Even with the CPU usage lower now, I'm experiencing buffering, using the NFS protocol (wireless N, Linux server).
Seems like the Box can't deal with any interruption of the data flow.
There is no way to make the Box read ahead a larger part of the movie, to avoid this?

Same results with debug "on", a slight improvement in this fw compared to previous 1.2 (buffering @45mbps)

For me the same as Josh mentioned.
I tried FW 1.1.3.19252 with the positive result that everything worked out of the box!
No bufferings up to 80MBit/s (Birds Test file).
Went to both 1.5 beta versions and buffering was constant - even in films that worked under 1.2.x buffring is now present.
I cannot use the box with these issues anymore!
As 80% of my movie library are blurays I have the problem nearly all the time!
Please boxee team let us know what is happening to this bug and if you can test and review this bug on you test beds!
Thx

I want to make it absolutely clear that this is NOT strictly an issue with SMB. I use NFS exclusively to stream MKVs from my DS212j NAS and anything beyond ~10Mbps is at risk of buffering. Currently using 1.5.0.23556, but it's happened on pretty much all versions.

I am also experiencing this issue...
There is a bottleneck of around 22Mbps on SMB playback of bluray ISOs, which causes buffering every few seconds. 1.1.1.19092 is able to stream at a rate of at least 40Mbps on a wired connection.
My Setup:
Tests using several Bluray ISO rips
Boxee connected to Cisco SG300 switch at 100Mbps
ReadyNAS 1100 running Raidiator 4.1.8 at 1Gbps

SMB Buffering/Dropouts every 10 mins - Utilization 40Mbps

Thankfully I only encounter this problem on a small % of my content. However I can confirm also that the issue is still present in the official 1.5 FW release.
If anything it may have improved slightly (I'm using SMB), but this is only a minor improvement, the video files in question are still unwatchable due to the excessive buffering.

The big thing this affects for me is attempting to stream raw video from my HD video camera. As others state, it worked perfect without buffering in older versions, but now buffers frequently. I just got the 1.5 upgrade tonight and did see some improvement over the previous version, but still not usable. Would love to see this fixed! Miss watching home videos on our Boxee!

Another "me too" here.
Buffering has gotten REALLY bad here after 1.5
I have a gigabit fully wired network. My server is a Solaris 11 box using ZFS and RAID-Z2
I have tested my network speed using TTCP and I'm getting an average of around 85MB/s (that's megaBYTES, not bits!) from the server.
4 gig MKV 90 minute file (which works out on average at around 0.85 MB/s), boxee buffers every 10 minutes. Boxee will bottleneck with it's 100 megabit interface, but I should still be able to send more than enough data with that bottleneck.
So my network is capable at transferring data 100 times quicker than is needed, and I'm still in buffering hell. Something is very wrong here.
Not sure if it's relevent or not (I am starting to suspect the issue is more related to MKVs than anything else) - The data is being transferred using Samba. Using NFS is not an option for me, as I am in a multiple O/S household and NFS is not a viable option for the Windows users.

Just want to agree with above -- I'm using wired NFS. Video to any other device on the network from the same source is fine -- any decent bitrate 720p MKV will buffer on the box. It seems like it doesn't actually *need* to buffer -- it's just mistakenly doing do. A 720p MKV will buffer every 15 or 20 mins maybe, in a pretty consistent way, which seems to me like it's not a bandwidth issue, but rather the way to box is handling network traffic / buffering.

I have a ticket open for early access (BOXEE-11913), but I think the now-closed BOXEE-11540 is on the right track.
CPU usage on 1.1.2.19250 is much lower than any of the newer firmwares. When the video bitrate jumps, i can see the buffer drop & CPU usage rise to 85-90%. The buffer then never recovers (even at a lower bitrate), but drops slowly to 0, then a buffer & repeat. Firmware 1.1.2.19250 does not have the buffering on any content.
The only other possible cause I've seen is that the fps usually jumps from 23.9xx to 24.xxx (usually 24.4xx) just before a buffer. Could it be a cadence detection issue that is throwing an error & bogging the system?
I'm using a non-dedicated Win7 x64 PC, older C2D mobile (1.83ghz), 2GB RAM, WD Green drives (1.5 & 2 TB) via a PCI expander card(3 drives, JBOD). SMB via 1Gbps router & 100Mbps switch (bypassing switch has no effect, direct to router has no effect, I made a 125' patch cable to test). I've done the registry changes recommended in the boxee forums (needed this on the 1.x firmware to eliminate buffering when the box arrived, no problems until after 1.2.xxx came out)
I can feed 2 laptops a blueray stream concurrently w/o any buffering wired OR with random, less-frequent buffering via wireless. I tried viewing on the PC the HDs are housed & I have problems streaming to both laptops - HD priority issue I assume.
I've been struggling with this for 6+ months. It would be nice to see BOXEE make some type of comments.

Loaded Ubuntu on my 'server' & SMB performance is better, but not perfect. I still get buffering, but at a reduced frequency (1/3 - 1/2 as often vs Win7). Using "i" while watching a movie, any time the video Mb/s went above ~20Mb/s, the vq% drops. It usually drops by about 5%, then recovers by 2-3% & repeat, until 0%, when it buffers (it has the same behavior with Win7, just drops faster).
So far, I haven't figured out how to use NFS with Ubuntu, but will try when possible.

Plug in ethernet. When using bluray rips depending on quality like 1080p, wireless usually does not cut it. Best to test with the ethernet and go from there. Then switch to to NFS which cuts down on quite a bit of the slowness till they fix smb.

Based on my experience and several of the other comments above, I think until they fix this you may be out of luck. I see the same issue with or without a wired connection. I've only tried SMB, but several comments above indicate they see the same on SMB/NFS. For the time being, your only option may be to convert your videos to a lower bit rate.

added a comment - - edited Based on my experience and several of the other comments above, I think until they fix this you may be out of luck. I see the same issue with or without a wired connection. I've only tried SMB, but several comments above indicate they see the same on SMB/NFS. For the time being, your only option may be to convert your videos to a lower bit rate.

I have now tried every possible solution, including direct connection, streaming over SMB is freezing every 10secs this includes everything from vob folders to simple mp3 audio files. The only solution is reverting to the old version. I was asked by two friends if I recommend Boxee Box and I had to send them elsewhere. It is a shame, since this sounds like one of the bugs that should be easy to work on (since it only came up in the new versions). I guess the company has different priorities which seem quite short sighted. Mine is going on ebay if the next version does not solve this.

I'd really like a comment from the boxee-team on the status of this issue...
Are you even working on a sollution?
It seems like you don't take this that serious, considering this bug has been there since the 1.2 update, and now a while ago you released 1.5 and the bug still isn't resolved...
To me (and obviously a lot of other boxee-users) this is a major problem, and makes the box kind of unusable...
So I'd like to know the status, so that I know if I should keep my boxee-box, or if I will have to look for something else....

This has been like this for a long time. Do not expect anything to be fixed for probably 6 months minimum. Right now they are validating with intel the new sdk which should be out in a month or two. After that is out, then they will prob attempt to fix this someday. If you look though at top you can see its not even in a planned release. Its triage waiting for pending at the triage office. You would figure they would take it more seriously, but most of their time is spent on the live tv option. If that does not tell you everything you need to know then nothing else will. Return your box, repurchase if they ever close this as fixed. Actions speaker louder than words. I myself have choose to live with it and switched to nfs which helps majority of the time with my setup.

I installed an NFS server in addition to using my SMB and neither perform better than the other. This isn't the only issue I've had since the firmware update, but is the main reason I don't use my boxee any more. What a complete disappointment.

Same issue here. NFS share over wire. Streaming from Synolog DS412+ and GBIT network. NAS Upload at 1MB/s while watching!

I solved the issue!
Returned both my Boxee's to Amazon and purchased Zotac ZBoxes.
(The issue isn't with SMB/NFS or any network protocol. The issue is that the Boxee software beyond 1.1x just plain sucks for the little intel chip it rides on. It may look better and have more features, but it's not made for the hardware. Anybody who is not having these issues watches piss poor quality stuff. Anything over 21-22mbps video bitrate causes the issues listed.)

What is sad is this particular issue is related the networking which was fine in 1.1 and below. Ever since 1.2 its been happening. This is not the same hd audio issues others are having as this happens with dts too. What should be an easy fix its been along time now.

Same thing has been happening to me. Happens on Blu Ray ISO files - CPU runs at 100% constantly until buffering. Buffering happens every couple of minutes. SMB or NFS get teh same results no difference. I'm eithernet wired with gigabit speed. Other devices can play this over the network no problem. Can we get any status on this issue please? I was thinking of getting another device such as WD Live TV Hub.

I'd go ahead and follow through on your last sentence. I put in a few comments back in January and nobody even seems to care about this issue right now. The Boxee team isn't going to take our word for anything when 90% of people watch 720p or less quality stuff anyway. Get a different streamer, or built a small HTPC with Zotac ZBoxes and Plex/XBMC

I know lots of folks have already figured this out, but last night I tried the old firmware (1.1.3.x) and everything worked fine! So now I know the little Boxee can do it, we just need the Boxee team to give us status on when this issue will be resolved. I have to admit, having something broke since 1.1.2 when they are now on 1.5 is not a good sign! One more time, CAN WE GET STATUS ON THIS ISSUE?

I opened a new issue to request status (ticket #51439)
First response: Kosta, May 23 04:43 am (EDT):
Hi,
The issue is open and assigned to R&D, currently there is no time frame for a resolution. Until the issue is resolved, if you experience performance issues with smb you can try to use NFS as a workaround.
Sorry for the inconvenience, Kosta
After I responded that this was not about SMB, as NFS also does not work, I got this response: Kosta, May 23 10:22 am (EDT):
Hi,
We are aware of the issue, between 1.1.3 and 1.5 we changed the smb in order to solve older issues and some users experience performance issues with the newer issues, we are aware of it and the issues is handled by R&D.
Kosta
So conclusion? They are aware, it has been open since August of 2011, and there is no target for resolving.

Also experiencing this issue using SMB over power line with 100 mbps connection. Didn't have this problem using AFP - although AFP wouldn't scan my files (the reason I switched).

Hmm, shame I can't return my box anymore.
Otherwise I would have. Amazing so few of the really important bugs boxee actually prioritizes.
None of my friends, family and colleagues will ever buy a boxee box.
All I (apparently) can do...

are you using SMB to share your media?
