Description

When I try and view NFL Game Pass content it informs me that the browser does not have the latest version of Flash player required. During my research I have seen posts on the forum of other users with similar issues requiring the latest Flash version 10.3 to watch some online content. I paid a lot of money for the Game Pass and to have it held back by a flash update is quite annoying. I'd really appreciate if this could be bundled out with an RC or update pack before the season starts in a couple of weeks.

I have had the same problem with trying to watch Video Content from UFC.com on my television. It says I require the latest version of Flash as well. This was one of the major reasons why I bought the Boxee Box so it is discouraging to not be able to use one of it's main functions.

I agree that this fix would be greatly appreciated since Abode Flash is now up to 10.3. Game Pass does indeed require version 10.2 or above so this will help out people using it or other sites requiring 10.2 or 10.3 versions. Thank you.

This effects a lot of YouTube content which many channels use such as channel 4, e4 and other mainstream content in the UK. Without YouTube the boxee is shelved.

Any ETA of the Flash 10.2 upgrade? I a big NFL fan, and got the Boxee Box to watch the NFL. I have the same problem with the Headweb app, which also requires Flash 10.2. I received a special offer from Boxee for a free movie, but the app doesn’t work!

The time its taken to solve this issue unfortunately really highlights the issues of the BoxeeBox. If we were running the Boxee on my laptop this would be a non issue. If Boxee want's to make it in hardware they need to be able to provide timely updates and fixes.

I suppose the more people who try to get this available, the quicker you guys will be able to update the Boxee to include the latest release?
Is there a developer area/forum/website where Flash for Linux CE is discussed? Please excuse my ignorance.

I wouldn't want to see my rather expensive and new Boxee Box become redundant as a web streamer.

I think the conclusion here is, that Boxee Box may have decided on a rather peculiar platform - since most of the content now relies on Flash.

The only viable solution is either a) get Adobe to support Linux CE (good luck), or b) contact the service-providers (that actually have apps for Boxee) and ask them to support Boxee Box (i.e. by not requiring a newer version of Flash than is possible on that platform).

they want to or can not.? I now regret the purchase. the dependence of support is too large.
if they do not want, I've had bad luck. must normally give the flash player update for each update. always!!

it would be helpful if the Flashplayer element of the firmware could be separated from the main firmware, and updated as needed.... it seems crazy that we have to wait for a 3 months firmware update cycle to get our boxes WORKING again!?!? This is an internet streamer guys.

I completely understand and share the frustration.

The Flash plugin is NOT developed by Boxee.

Timelines and which versions make it to embedded solutions in general and to the platform we are using in particular are not in our control.

When there is a version in the pipeline, as in this case, we are are very bullish on getting it sooner rather than later - and when it is released to us, it still has to undergo rigorous certifications by Adobe.

We are committed to BOTH OUR USERS AND TO ADOBE, to update whenever a new version IS AVAILABLE. And we do just that.

10.2 is not around the corner - it's a few months away.

this is a great shame, but thank you for the info Tom. Users will now appreciate that this is not in the hands of boxee and we should be grumbling to adobe (or infact the websites in question, who have moved to a version of flash not fully supported by all platforms!)

Thanks for the update, it's obviously a very small market for Adobe so I doubt they prioritise it much. Such a shame.

NFL fans should pray for some sort of app that was mentioned for Boxee, Apple TV etc late last year. There is an iPhone/iPad GamePass app scheduled for release in September, so they obviously can do it in a non-flash environment.

Unfortunately I have to tell them that is expected in the next 4 weeks, no update of Flash Player.

In the next firmware update is version one, but this is probably not until November, since the Boxee software on the box is not developed by us, but of Boxee, we can unfortunately no further information as to an update.

The problem with the Flash player is known, the solution is, but in the hands of Boxee.

and the next step is the sale or return of BB, because it is not functional for video

The 4od website works and some 4od content on you tube channel works HOWEVER I just checked out the 4od Docs and the flash issue still remains. Therefore can Boxee scrape the 4od website content rather than the you tube channel?

1) All 4oD comments that goes like "Please fix Flash support ASAP" and "What can we do to make Adobe run faster" is GOOD (if bruteforce doesn't work - apply some more).

2) All comments like "would you please make a better 4oD app" or "you could scrape something for...", that is, comments that are NOT related to the Flash update should be handled elsewhere.

Can we somehow apply more pressure on Adobe to get the CE Linux support re-prioritized?
Can we apply pressure on the content-owners as to not require Flash versions not supported on Boxee to content served by their applications?

Generally, there are problems since the beginning with Adobe Flash Player update. Although I was actually informed about the features that I had overlooked this point,

Es kann doch nicht so schwierig sein Adobe Flash Player zu aktualisieren.
Die sinn frei ausrede das Adobe schuld ist, halte ich gelinde gesagt für eine Ausrede.
Wann bekommen sie dieses update in den Griff.

OK, I appreciate that when content providers change the format of their videos it is difficult to keep up, however, what is inexcusable is that the Boxee is still being advertised as providing access to the content partners that can not be accessed - both on boxee.tv (NFL etc.) and on UK retailer's sites (4OD). D-Link are effectively guilty of misselling the Boxee and as it is a known issue, it can only be regarding as deliberate misrepresentation! If the matter is not going to be fixed asap, efforts should be made to ensure no claims are made as to the ability of Boxee to access content it can not access!

It's good to see lots of people voicing opinions - at least that means the issue gets noticed.
However after watching this issue for some time, I think the Boxee team are very aware of this issue so the above suggestion is not the best way forward. Trying to start a PR nightmare, smear campaign or legal headache for either the Boxee team or the hardware manufacturers is not going to help this issue, just do damage and take attention away from getting it fixed.

It's pretty clear the content providers are the ones at fault for moving to a flash version which does not fully represent their audience and excludes people like us. Unfortunately, this leaves Boxee at the mercy of Adobe when it comes to getting the latest flash version on there.

I would ask the community & fellow Boxee lovers (and haters) to politely and patiently wait. It will happen.

I would also ask the Boxee team, developers, JIRA contributors etc, to please post regular (i.e. bi-weekly) updates on this issue to report progress, timescales or developments. Even if there is no good news, a quick status report would be very much appreciated and keep everyone informed...which as loyal customers, is the decent thing to do.

Google is currently shipping Adobe Flash CE 10.2 on all their 2.0 Google TV devices (including Sony TV's and Logitech Revues) . Other players like Roku and the like already have this in their firmwares. This fixed 100% of the issues with users with NFL, etc on Google TV.

10.3 should ship in a month or 2 following, or they may skip it and hit 11 with the ICS release to GTV in early 2012 (guess there). Adobe Flash CE 10.2 shipped in May of 2011 - just for reference.

Boxee - no more excuses.

@ Steve, speaking from experience of industry, I don't think you could be more wrong - Getting the attention of senior management in D-Link is exactly what will get the ball rolling - at the moment, it's known about in the development team but I doubt there are any D-Link board members tracking the issue - they certainly would be if they were at risk of the units being withdrawn from the shelves!

What you CAN do is return the Boxee Box - since it's sold (and closed) SOLELY for the purpose of delivering specific content to the end-user.

When it fails to do so (regardless of what the excuses may be), the end-user in effect does NOT get what they paid for.

This has moved from being a joke to being a serious violation of the Boxee to end-user contract.

The impact is severe - NO users actually buying the product for anything put "local media" will ever recommend the Box to any one else.
The existing owners will suffer - since D-Link eventually will stop posting money into a dead product.

Saying that "it's not Boxees fault - stop blaming them" is just plain wrong. They don't deliver on a PROMISE - that IS their fault - they shouldn't build a product that relies so heavily on Flash, and then choose a platform unsupported by that same technology.

I really didn't think when I created this issue at the end of July that we'd still be sitting here in November, with only one update of note from the Boxee team.

Not everyone scours and reads forums before purchasing, especially if the product claims to do everything out-of-the-box. I would be very angry if I'd just bought one and tried to watch content only to find out that I couldn't due to hardware limitations (that I couldn't do anything about).

This is really lame, websites are updating there flash version Boxee need to fix this or create a workaround and force Adobe's Hands if they must to get the source code for there own flash player. Or just start support Adobe's version of Flash so they don't have to keep up.

ESPN3 is still dead, too.

So there are a couple fixes to this problem:
1. Send feature requests to ESPN3, Fox, and others to create add HTML5 support.
2. Until that happens, get a better version of Flash in Boxee. (Adobe? Boxee? Make it happen.)

Disappointed, £170 to have the BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD and 5 player and what do I get? Zilch. None of the players were on the box, I needed to update which only gave me BBC iPlayer. I had to mess around and eventually got ITV Player from a repository which I'm guessing isn't the proper ITV Player but I was happy nonetheless, went to watch a program and oh, need flash player.

If we have to be technical enough to search and add repositories, why can't you make the browsers so that we can update the Flash players ourselves? What happens when a new Flash player comes out? Judging by the comments it's taken over 6 months for this update and still no ETA.

If I send the Boxee box back to Amazon, I lose 10%.

TOTALLY RIPPED OFF.

This is a huge issue which if unresolved will force many of us to abandon BoxeeBox; those using Boxee on a PC/Mac platform at least have some kludgey way to mitigate this disaster, but not for the Box hardware owners. Many of us on this forum are looked at to provide guidance on leading edge consumer electronics by family, friends, and associates- I will have to inform my network that this is a show stopper and therefore cannot recommend the Box unless and until this is corrected.

Couldn't help but notice that this issue has been going on since July 2011... With 135 000 Members on the Boxee Forums, that's ~27 Million $ worth of Boxee customers, you should have enough pull to convince Adobe to release a CE version of Flash 11 or be able to fund the release.

I have firmware 1.5 installed today and as always, was the flash player is not updated, and no trace of silverlight.

They have promised to update it, unfortunately they do not keep their promise to support one. Ash says the German suppport it was not a major component but even then they take it from the description. also the flash is unsupported solutions. Unfortunately this is not a forum but only a temp recorded was no list of them.

As for Silverlight, it has never ever been available on Linux...ever. So stop asking about it. I was nice enough not to send it back for a refund. Can the team be nice enough to give us a status update?

In the post, see "...Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook..." which means that other software/hardware companies have done a better job at pitching Adobe. If those companies have an 11.1 embedded version, why can't the Boxee BD team get it? Very curious.

I understand that this is controlled by Adobe.

But to sell a box for the primary focus to stream from the web and then fail to support now widly used version of Flash is BS. Right now I can use my box for about 40% of what I would like to use it for. As soon as there is a valid alternative to Boxee Box I will change. I bought the box from you. You failed to have it working for the purpose the product was created (by not having a valid partnership with such a player as Adobe). Fix this or loose alot of customers!

Just be honest with us. A quick blog post. An official tweet with some REAL INFORMATION. A response on this JIRA. Whats the deal? How long will we have to wait? Are adobe even working on anything? You're currently selling a product in the UK that cannot access much of anything as a result of this issue. Your core users are melting away because the new company line is to keep us in the dark all the time. Can you guys even remember the fun days before the money arrived and you had to release the 1.x?

I vented out a long message of frustration. However, I deleted it since it wasn't going to help and the 5 minutes that it would have taken for someone at the Boxee team to read it, would have been 5 less minutes of their 9 to 5 job that they could spend trying to fix this 6+ month issue.

More and more websites require newer versions of flash. This is ridiculous that we are still stuck with such an obsolete version of Flash. This needs to get updated or this box will be obsolete very quickly. Bad move basing the Box on Intel CE....I guess we're out of luck now that Intel CE has been discontinued??

Adobe does not support Flash 10.3 (the latest version) on connected devices like the Boxee Box. We are waiting to get a version and commence work - no timeline for that yet. Yuvalt from the forum: Boxee does not develop Flash. Intel is the licensee (and actually working with other 3rd party on porting Flash to their platforms and certifying it). The only thing we are doing is push Intel for updates and bug fixes. At this point, due to the situation with Adobe Flash for TV, there is no clear roadmap for updating to a newer version. This is why you see this "no comment". We don't have good news and we don't have bad news. I would love to have newer version of Flash as much as you guys would, but it is completely out of our hands. If there is any update we will let you know. At this point it's clear that Flash for video is dying and that Internet videos will be based on HTML 5 (either standard or other, more secure means where DRM is required). We are in a transition period, that's why it's so frustrating.

i would say that as the Intel platform has been discontinued, support is likely to be less than first class on this and as Adobe have signalled their move away from flash (especially for less well used platforms) i doubt they have a big team working on things.

This would be corroborated by Yuvalt's comment that a 3rd party is assisting porting flash to the intel platform - perhaps Adobe are not helping -at all-.... in which case, i'd say we're in for a LONG wait.

2) DO put peer pressure on the services that you promise to deliver, and make sure they either use a supported version of Flash or (better) move to HTML 5.
Problem solved. It's not he "missing Flash 10.3" that's the issue, it's the "missing access to services promised".

I started having this problem a few days ago, trying to watch the latest episodes of the Colbert Report and Daily Show. Interesting that I'm able to watch streaming HD videos of Modern Family on ABC though, as I thought that too, was Flash based. Maybe they haven't updated their site yet, but if Boxee browser Flash updates aren't timely, it will make it hard to get the immense benefit of the browser. Please fix this soon!

The NCAA and CBS just announced their plans for streaming March Madness this year. Lo and behold, it requires Flash 10.2 or higher. That means that we will not be able to watch the games on the Boxee Box. Yet another sector of the web has been cut off from Boxee due to this limitation.

Is Boxee working with CBS to get access to the non-Flash stream? I would be happy if there was a March Madness app on Boxee. I'm more than willing to pay the $3.99 price tag for access to the games.

Boxee Box doesn't run Ubuntu. It runs Linux CE. Adobe hasn't released Flash 11 for Linux CE.

I don't think we will see a good will from Adobe, if they are targeting only one Browser on Linux platform I don't think they will find time to complie binary version on flash player For Linux CE on Intel Atom. Maybe it would be possible to implement PAAPI in Boxee Browser, I don't know will it be possible at all but at least that could be kind of a solution for the problem we all are facing here.

This seems like its now one of the biggest problems facing the Boxee Box, and one with a very uncertain outcome.
I can only imagine how frustrated the Boxee team is with this issue (Adobe!). I'll just hope for a miracle (ASAP), I guess...

IMHO the non-response of the Boxee Dev Team is a defacto admission that Boxee Product Management made a poor choice of product strategy to begin with. How could they have chosen to tightly couple a critical piece of their product to a technology that is known to issue frequent, almost monthly, point releases, many of which invalidate client-side players as we have seen. The device is now less functional than my hacked iTV Version 1.

Time to call a pig a pig. Off to explore Roku. What a shame.

The Boxee team has already responded to this about a hundred times. There is no secrecy here. If you look virtually anywhere you'll see that flash version 11 i not yet available for CE devices.

I love my boxee box however I could not stream the NCAA Mens basketball Tourny at all and now I cannot stream the masters golf tournament from the masters website (which requires flash 10.2) http://www.masters.com/en_US/live/index.html

Sold it. Hot potato-ed to another person, hope he uses it just for local media streams and not anything delivered by or requiring Flash. What a disappointment. Off looking at WD Live, Roku, possibly ATV2.5 or whatever they're calling it.

The boxee box was the best box ever 3 months ago. With all the main streaming sites moving to updated versions of flash, the boxee box becomes worthless for the streaming aspect...

I was going to buy a Boxee Box TODAY until I read about this eight month old problem which cripples it's ability to stream from CBC, CTV, etc. I could ignore the other little bugs, but THIS bug was the deal breaker. I would love to own one and I may still buy one, but not until this issue is fixed.

CBC and CTV works just fine for me. Most stuff works just fine. Its only FOX and ESPN that don't work for me, of what I tried anyway.

My Boxee Box arrived a few days ago and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any flash problems when trying to access content from Canadian broadcasters. I am VERY happy with my purchase. CBC, CTV, Global, ComedyNetwork, and any other one I tried to watch all work perfectly. Maybe they switched to HTML5. At any rate, this flash issue hasn't been a problem for me. Thanks for the info, Steve!

For Canadian broadcasters, CityTV hasn't worked for awhile because it requires the Flash update. Boxee just removed all CityTV shows from the listing so you don't see it.

Also just today it looks like Global has stopped working. When trying to catch up with Survivor and the Office, it just says you need Flash 10.1 or higher (I thought Boxee did have Flash 10.1). Hopefully this is just a detection glitch on Global's end and not another Canadian broadcaster that we're about to lose until we get an updated Flash version on Boxee.

Bruce, sorry but I am afraid you will be as disappointed as all the others on this incredibly long list of bug comments, rants, etc. As more an more online broadcasters move to the latest minor point release of Flash, more an more content becomes unreachable.

It hasn't worked in over 6 months, the staff are totally avoiding the issue. Passing blame to everyone but themselves, first adobe, then intel. Unwilling to admit there's even a problem, it's pretty clear they never had a decent business model, the whole thing hinged on this hacked together XBMC fork that only worked in the first place because of it's open source nature being able to program around incompetent media companies. Then when Boxee gained popularity because if it's pretty UI, they decided to cash in with dlink, but it has zero sustainability. Nothing in the Uk works, except iPlayer, who are actively going out of their way to work on everything.

To get 4OD you have to use the awful youtube app, there's no Channel5, no ITV, all the american stuff like comedy central is 60 second previews, and not full eps.
No lovefilm, no netflix, no blinkbox. It's an embarrassment. They've already dropped the price by about £50 because everyone on amazon is rating it 1 star and no one is buying, so I've already made a huge loss.

The PS3 has a far better online media selection, all tv channels, netflix, lovefilm, everything you'd want. It's even a bluray device.


I pity anyone that buys one of these.

its starting to look doubtful but I'm still able to find enough content to tide me over. Its used for the most part by my 2 and 3 yr olds who use youtube to stream annoying kids shows all day long. Other than that I use Navi-X and watch alot off of the Comedy Network and CTV here in Canada since they havnt updated yet. If you don't subscribe to a VPN or use Unblock-US then thats all you'll get in Canada. I do subscribe to unblock-US and that does allow me access to alot more American stuff, however most of it has already been upgraded to the latest flash and no longer works on boxee. BBC Iplayer works well with unblock-us so there is alot of good content there. If you are patient and keep track of your sources there are plenty of things to keep you entertained. Boxee should not require one to struggle with it and bend international copyright laws inorder to get content that would normally be available legit if flash could be updated on the box though. Blame Adobe, Blame Intel, Blame Boxee. Whats it matter? This has been an issue for an extremely long time. I've only had the Box since xmas. Starting to regret paying so much for something I could of got elsewhere for far less. I'd return it if I could. The potential was there but someone somewhere let it slip away.

Now today GlobalTV has decided to update flash and we're stuck with nothing working at all.

Is there any way of providing the ability for th user to update flash manually if they run into this problem? Not as part of a firmware update, but all on it's own.

This problem has gone on for too long. Even YouTube doesn't stream reliably.

Boxee can't do anything until Adobe releases the Flash update for Linux CE sadly. I'd like to see Boxee put more pressure on Adobe and whomever else they need to to get this done. This has gone on for far to long. I would not have bought this thing if I had know it would be useless in less than 6 months of purchase.Put the pressure on already. Boxee team, Let us know what you are doing in order to resolve this. No more silence please. You owe us that much at the very least for the nearly $200 we gave you.

They are targeting PPAPI for Linux and from what I think we can wait forever for porting recent flash for Linux CE. PPAPI is open source solution possibile to implement in third party browsers. PPAPI should provide the hardware absratcion layer for various browsers plugins and could be kind of a solution to this problem. PPAPI is implemented in Google Chrome and open source version of Chromium browser which I use a lot at my Linux Boxes (and all streaming is working flawlasy there NBA.tv, Youtube, Vimeo etc.). Maybe a compilation of Chroimium for Boxee would be possible. I think at least someone from Boxee could step up and explain if they think it is the right way to go and if not why not.

Surely it is false advertising on the boxee website stating if you can play it on a computer you can play it on a boxee box.

if there not even responding surely they have no interesting in fixing the problem.
Im well and truly sickened, wish i bought a different set top media box now.

And is netflix available on it or not? as it is still on the website as featured content

You pretty much can except for certain flash sites right now. That is all on adobe, I would recommend bringing this up with them. For the record, Im sure boxee is very very interested in updating flash but they do not own or control adobe. And yes, netflix is 100% available in the US.

Netflix works just fine in Canada and the US. It probably works just fine elsewhere with a US VPN or a services like Unblock-US and a pre-paid US credit card. Its not only flash thats killing the boxee right now its the lack of the ability to play LIVE streaming content as well. RTMP, which most live streaming content is, does not work on boxee either. Thats another issue but yet another one that goes against what the box is advertised to be able to do. I really do think if Adobe does not give Boxee the flash update that Boxee needs to accept responsibility for their poor choices during development. Maybe what Andrzej said will give us some hope. I'd love to hear what the Boxee team has to say about that suggestion.

Just my opinion, but based on my own experiences and challenges in the business of computer programming over 25 years , plus observing the behaviors of numerous software vendors we deal with, it is my suspicion that the directors at Boxee are mulling over various exit strategies rather than continue to deal with an endless string of problematic upgrades imposed on them by external sources. Something they may not have anticipated when they ventured into the boxee concept. Hopefully this will prove wrong.

Well, their strategy is simple, wait it out, hope the customers stay, and eventually Flash will be obsolete, and everything will move to HTML5 - a technology Boxee already support through their browser. But I guess that is just one of the exit-strategies mentioned my A Grant :)

I have an idea that might get someone motivated to fix this issue. Money! I'll gladly pay $5 for a current Flash Player on the Boxee Box. Judging by the length of this thread, they would make a bundle of cash. Not sure if they can target updates to certain boxes, but if they can this might work.

I understand the anger in here about this issue. I've posted here many times as well, expressing my frustration. So many things I love to watch, like ESPN3, no longer work. However, saying that Boxee is not dealing with the issue, or making assumptions about the executives of Boxee looking at an exit strategy from the company is off-base.

Boxee has repeatedly explained the issue, including Avner himself talking about it in his public online Q&A sessions. (I applaud him for holding these events and answering questions from customers point-blank. That's pretty awesome.) The executives aren't going anywhere. I imagine they are weighing the cost/benefit analysis of working around the limitations of the Intel and Adobe platforms.

It's a sucky situation that all us users are in, but I do believe that Boxee would do something if it was feasible. Unfortunately, I don't know if it is at this point.

how is the next boxee box going to be maintained IDEOLOGICALLY differently?

I setup bbox at three different houses because of the alleged ease.

the actual XBMC setups are looking more an more appealing

Even the Raspberry Pi with XBMC looks to be more functionally capable!! that's sad, boxee

Fortunately usenet sourcing is still viable for programming I have licensed.

I want better gui treatment as a LOCAL ONLY user.

I have no interest in privacy rape (ad supported) apps!!!!

I still want to know why Boxee aren't providing 4od content to the uk because of the flash issue if you can go to http://ps3.channel4.com/ and watch the content.

Looking at all the comments and following some of the links. I think it is fair to say Adobe is dumping flash player funding and focusing their budget on HTML5.

In business world take this pretty much means cut all funding to smaller development projects and continue to support mainstream development until "date-x" when we will have a global press day saying Flash is dead.

For us Boxee users that means I don't think we are ever going to see a Flash update built and we can only apply pressure to media companies to jump on the HTML5 bandwagon which given Adobe has made the announcement already to pull flash funding providers should start scrambling for HTML5.

I have been using Boxee since it was first announced.
After all these years i have decided to get rid of my htpc and use the boxee box, only to find out that i bought a piece of plastic with some electronics inside, that cannot provide the content promised.
Guys when will you wake up and resolve this issue? you might want to put out a warning or to tell distributors, such as Amazon to place a warning to ppotential buyers.

Confirmed - Flash update is on the way in the final Boxee Box update

"Second – we will be releasing an updated Flash player for Boxee in the next few months. It should improve the browser experience and add some important content back to the TV show library. We will post an update in November which will let you know when to expect the release of the updated Flash player."

Too little too late. I sold my Boxee box months ago, it's not handled online video for a year, and we've had ZERO updates telling us what is going on. I switched to XBMC a while ago, and haven't looked back. It's so much more powerful than Boxee was that I wonder how the company still exists considering Boxee is based on XBMC.

Even if they release a flash update now, this will repeat itself in the future, the Boxee team have showed how they view their customers, and if they haven't had any respect for them for the past year, they wont in the future too.

Just liked how they promised Netflix support nearly a year ago, and are now saying Boxee Box wont have it after all.
